Mighty small kit there Andy... My eyes don't work on stuff that small without a magnifying glass... I almost bought that very kit - but decided that if I had, it would likely live in it's box until some day that my heirs or grand kids would pull it out to assemble or....

Fujimi makes both MK IIA and MK I "B/C" models in 1/24. The MK IIs were imported 20 years ago by Revell under their name. I bought a dozen of 'em at Big Lots as $1.99 closeouts......

If you're only going to own one large GT40 model, what's the best one? Any suggestions? It's not like I have room for it, but I will make room if it's pretty enough.

Hello.

If you want a model kit, there is only one "large" model of this car, the 1/12th Trumpeter kit which represents the 66' le mans winner.

There is also a "die cast" model of it, same scale made by CMC I guess, but pretty expensive (arround 900$ on ebay).

The trumpeter kit costs around 150$. I've bought it, and I've started construction.

There are a lot of shortcuts and mistakes in this kit, but the shape looks good in my opinion, and some mistakes can easily be corrected, some others not. KA Model has realesed a transkit for it, it costs the price of the kit, and offers a few improvments to the kit.

Hey Jim, just put a window in the garage with a picture frame around it and look at the 1:1 scale from a distance........

I agree with Oliver that the 1/12 model is the best (for best replace with only) kit you can build yourself, as for pre built, exoto make a Le Mans replica but as with all things GT40 pricey..... I can post links for you if you like Jim.

Oliver where is the thread and photos of the build.... I want that kit (after the 1/24 thats what I plan to build).

Please do post links!... I had a look at the 1:10 Exoto, I think it is, but the price is formidable. I could buy a set of Webers for that much. I DID buy a set of Webers for that much. But it would be nice to have one GT40 in the house; I like large model cars, they sort of balance out the model boats around here.

Hi Jimbo

Here is a link to the trumpeter kit beeing built:

1:12 1966 Ford GT40 - Automotive Forums .com Car Chat

For the die cast, scroll down on this page. Seems to be out of stock but can be found through Ebay I gess...

GMP Diecast - Diecast Car Replicas; Muscle Cars, Sprint Cars, Dirt Cars, Road Racing Cars, Vintage Dirt Cars and Dragsters; plus Fender Guitar Replicas and World War II Military Aircraft Replicas

For Doc: any wip for the moment. Will share some pics when I'll have something to show.
For the moment, I'm having test fits, head scratching about how to correct some mistakes, wondering how to assemble it in order to have the paint made easily....

Olivier.

Jim, it depends on if you wish to buy or build, and if you want a MKI or a MKII.

The Exoto 1/10 car is beautiful (although some take exception to the inaccurate white outlines on the headlight graphics), and so is the GMP 1/12 MKI. I couldn't decide, and so got both. I also built a 1/24 Fujimi MKII as my "driver". Now, thanks to this thread, I'm going to start looking for the Trumpeter kit. I hope they do a MKI version.

Mark

Jim,

Exoto is running a special this weekend "double coupons" You could get it at half price I would think.

Hi Guys

I recently e-mailed Exoto to ask about a MkI GT40 which at present they do not do. I received a reply stating they have two MkI's under development. One will be a 1/18th scale the other a 1/10th scale. They also said that they would be of a greater detail than the current GT40's. Cant wait. It was interesting that they stated how much it costs to develop a new model. $300,000.00 for a 1/18th scale and $600,000.00 for the 1/10th scale.

Regards Martin

Oliver, please can you post pictures of your Trumpeter MKII as you assemble it. I know there was a detailed report in Scale Model Autos. I have some concerns about the tailpipes being fluted. But the main decals missing are of the New Zealand Fern and Bruce Mclaren shields. The tyres should be Goodyear Blue Streak with the Blue circles on inner edge of the tyres. I also heard that the kit was based on P1046 as it is now and even contains a modern battery.
I think this kit for all the criticism it received is a great way to get a accurate large scale MKII. A transkit is being made a firm called Rennaisance.
Incidentially I have a large scale kit of the GT40 in 1/16th scale made by Bandai. Unfortunately its no longer made 1970's. And I do not know how acurrate it would be made up
Regards Allan

Will post some pics as long as I have some interesting progress to show.
The 1/12th trumpeter kit has great shapes imho, but I'm not specialist of the GT40 as some members around are...

As I told before, the rear section of the car (humm... the most interesting...) is way from accurate.
Tailpipes are fluted (good point!)
The suspension is wrong due to a lot of shortcuts, the lower trailing arms are missing, uprights are wrong, the front of the engine is literally missing (flying pulleys without anyhing behind!)
the rear crossmenber is missing (actually, this is what I'm working on for the moment).

Front suspension is made in the same way: wrong uprights, wrong calipers...

Renaissance has already realeased the missing decal. Don't know if they will have a real transkit for it. Maybe some photoetching. But I'm not sure that any company will have the investment necessary to correct everything on this kit.

Scalemotorsport had annouced that they wished to realease a transkit, but they gave upwhen they had the kit in hands.

I don't understand why trumpeter did this kit that way, because there are very beautyfull parts (body, rims, front and rear hoods...), and some others really "approximatives". Anyway, a must have for any GT40 fan...

Cheers

Olivier.

WOW, so many modeller I didnt know out there.

I took the Trupeter kit (cause everything related to the gt is interesting for me..u know),but was disappointed by too many parts, and in 1/12 a static model HAVE to be perfect (in this, the old porsches from Tamiya are something incredible...u really have in hands the perfection of the 911).
Alredy sold it 3 times... it is a production model, and the box art was done by a drunked.Shame cause also in our forum here we have too many good artist drawing the geetee...

I personally love also the Le mans miniature gt40 mk1.For me is the nicest model in 24 around, and I love such WARM french models, much much more than cold MFH (model factory hiro) ones.
Too often such artigianals japanese company make ugly lines mistake, as for the ford P68

Doc, as u see in AF forum I am working hardly on the bmw m3 gtr (as my free-not sure I will see it to owner- work), and also hardly working over a too rare Alfa romeo formula 1 Prototype type 162 for the museum......as well as some interior parts for an upcoming 333sp in 1/12 scale (oooops...dont tell this to anybody around plz..LOL).

My only shame is that working on my models I nearly destroyed the white Tornado T-shirt scott calabro gifted me some yrs ago (I still save also envelope and his signature in my showcase....too nice)

Why dont we create a gt40s.com league as modellers? ;)
