Best-sounding GT40?

Apropos of nothing, I just stumbled across this link I bookmarked years ago and thought I should share it.

LOVE the sound of this GT40! Is it original? I suspect it might be?

What gives the sound of the car that spins? Cam timing? Configuration of exhaust and megaphones?

If you removed the silencers from your 180 degree exhaust system, installed megaphones and had a camshaft of a similar profile, your car would likely sound the same way..

That really is a very sweet sound in the top video. The GT 40 involved in the spin was at Amelia Island this year and I heard this car driving on the road as it entered the grounds to park for the concours. The sound is stunning, truly stunning. It had the Mega's but its sound as far as I recall was more "throaty" a deeper bellow but magical nonetheless.

Flat plane crank maybe.

Flat plane crank V8s sound very bland and dull. Listen to a Ferrari 308 sometime and try to keep from falling asleep!

No, these are both just examples of loads of engine compression and straight pipes with megaphones on a 180-degree exhaust system. Awesome!

Mike,

I have noticed that the smaller motors 289, 302, seem to have a slightly sweeter sound, have you noticed that?

Sweeter, I presume you mean? Yes, for sure--the smaller displacement and higher rpm results in a higher tone. Big-blocks sound big and booming and deep (which is no bad thing--I LOVE the sound of my 427 Cobra!) but small-blocks WAIL like these two, especially with 180-degree exhausts.

Mike (MHNCO) Your car sounds like what I would like to have in my car, the video where you leave the parking lot just sounds perfect.
I also like the sound of the video Brian put up, I believe that is 1051 and I am hoping that with megaphones I will get a similar note.
I am running a cam that is identical to the Le-Mans cam minus .010 lift on the exhaust, so well see possibly later this month or early May when I get the motor fired what I have.
That muffled bassy sound with mufflers just doesn't cut it.
Cheers

Thanks. No silencers here. It sounds very good in person but I am going to attempt to try some different configurations looking for a slightly different tone.

I think Phil is right... has to be 1051. There are a couple other videos on youtube of the same car. One driving down the owners driveway and one with popping webers. Not sounding near as good. Wonderful car that 1051!

Question: How do Gurney heads affect the sound?

I realize this is not a GT40, but if you haven't heard this 1.5 liter beast, you need to! Turn your speakers WAY up and be prepared to grin ear to ear.
