Insurance in UK

Am trawling around looking for insurance quotes, does anyone know of a company that specialises in GTD's?

The term 'kit car' sends most insureres running!

Hi Julian

My 351w GT40 MK3 is with Osborn and Son's, limited to 3000 miles at £350 per year comp
Tel 020-8388 6000.

Hi Chris,

I already tried Osbourne's & they came back with a figure of £680 at 1500 miles per year.

However I did tell them it was a kit car & maybe if I just said 'GTD' I may have got a better rate.

They also said anything valued over £15000 gets additional premium loading.

regards,

Hi Malcolm

It's my understanding that your insurance premium is based upon the type of liability that your driving skill reflects.
Plus the amount of paper-work you give them to read!!!!
Hence you pay more than me or Paul T

Hi Malcolm King

I thought about going to America in 1970, then I found out about that chap, Mr Ralf Nader!!
But you are right, we in the UK pay through the nose.

Chris .

Dont hear much from Ralph these days, however dont they have Ralphs all over the world. My insurance is cheap and I like the price of petrol on this side of the world. They dont worry about the engine size, just your driving record and that your 25 or more.
Montana is a great place to drive, its the big sky country, with lots of open space.

I used Footman James & Co Ltd for comprehensive cover for 1500 miles 319.20
but then had to increase cover to 3000 miles last year. I was quoted an excessive 140.70 for the extra 1500 miles cover, although other club members had increased their mileage allowance for far less. Before you take out cover get a quote for increasing the mileage,in writing, and at least you have the option to compare rates!

I had the same issue on quotes as you. In the end I went with Adrian Flux insurance which gave me £652 for a limited mileage policy of 2,000 miles per year with free track day cover (but with excess of £2,000 on these days).

Not bad given that I live in London

Hi julian

they know the GT40 as a GTD so don't say the word's "Kit car" do say "GTD 40" I should try again and tell them you are a club member.

Chris

First the 70mph speed limit, then speed camera's, then the SVA,then no 15"ZR rated tire's and now high insurance!!!
Whats next?

I moved from that part of the world 45 years ago, and now only visit. Costs were too high then, and are still too high today. Some things never change, and when they dont change, I move on.

Try AON Classic Car dept. A numebr of us insure through here and get a price around the £400 to £500 mark depending on how old and wrinkly you are, (Chris must be really really old to get a price of £350!!!!!!

). You get track day cover chucked in for nothing and there is no no-claims bonus system so you don't need to have built that up. Aon are based in Farnborough and Chobham I think.

I have used Competition Car Insurance (Egger Lawson) and found them very good and helpful. All staff there are into cars! No track day cover thrown in but you can get competition cover for hill climbs and sprints and track days seperately (not quite so cheap!). These guys will be listed in your old blue books.
