In order to get the º and other special charcters do this:
While holding the alt key down, hit 167 on the numeric key pad. This will give you the degree, º, symbol. The symbols available can be found in an ASCII table available like the one here. The number to use is the decimal equivalent which is the first column in the regular ASCII table and the only number given in the Extended ASCII table (page down). Some of the control characters, decimal 0 - 31, may not work or may give an unexpected character. You must use the numeric key pad, or the key combination that allows you to use the numbers associated with the keys on the right side of the keyboard on most laptops, for this to work. The number keys on the top row will, generally, not work.
