Carbon Mono

Development work on our Carbon Monocoque is now completed after almost 2 years.
Attached are the first few available pictures.
It is also available manufactured in Aluminium at a more reasonable price.
More details to follow in the next few days.

I especially like the new style radiator and front & rear clip hinge mounts.

Re: Carbon Mono

Lots of new parts for this car to make it lighter, stronger and stiffer than anything else out there.

Our goal was to make a car that looks visually like a 60s GT40 but has the performance of a modern day super car at a sensible price.

Most carbon chassied cars like the McLaren F1 etc cost 100s of 1000s of pounds.

Re: Carbon Mono

Very nice, Andy!

Will there be a build thread as previously mentioned?

So what does your one actually cost then? Or do we need to go to your website to find out?

Looks very nice anyway.

Re: Carbon Mono

Is this chassis using Teklam composite panels ala Mosler?

TEKLAM Corp - Providing the Industry with Laminated Products

Or is this some other kind of folded box structure?

Re: Carbon Mono

Will

Thanks for the comments. Much appreciated.

Doug

There will be a build thread at some point in time.

Maxiboy

Prices will be released in a few days time along with further details. Our web site will be updated next week.

WYLD

The chassis does not use Teklam panels. Its constructed like an F1 chassis.

Everyone

Thanks for the interest. More details and pics tomorrow.

Andy

Re: Carbon Mono

I daresay it is NOT constructed like an F1 chassis...it is not built in a multipiece mold with hand layup and autoclaved.

First, you use panel construction. That is evident by all the flat surfaces and intersecting planes. A one-piece monocoque has lots of curves for a reason...it is the most efficient way to transfer loads in composites. Anyone who works with composites knows that they work best in compound curves, not as flat sheets or with sharp edges and angles.

Second, if you DID build it like an F1 chassis, it would cost more than most peoples finished cars.

Third, I didn't mean to downgrade or discredit any of the effort that went into making this chassis. In fact, I was going to congratulate you on capitalizing on the benefits (cost, weight and strength) of using bonded laminate sandwich panels. Obviously you did not.

Re: Carbon Mono

so is this effectively a central tub made from a wet layup carbon mat with a front and rear subframe type arrangement ? difficult to really tell from the pics / limited description -

perhaps some more comprehensive technical detail of the method of construction / production would be helpful ? simply saying that its built like an f1 car would tend to leave the credibility door wide open , weights would be a very interesting comparator , if its wet layup and of any thickness / strength ive always found the weight advantage to be somewhat negated , all you really would achieve is 'prettier ' finished fibre / glass however if captain autoclave has paid a visit then the strength / weight balance could be right up there -

Re: Carbon Mono

Looks great and well done. Hopefully development and testing will come in time. Pity the slc is just left up to home builders to finish it off
congrats

Re: Carbon Mono

Colin

Chassis weight in Carbon is 122 lbs or 55.45 Kgs

GTRene

Thanks

Keith

Sorry to disappoint.

Craig

Thanks and I hope you were not being sarcastic like last time you congratulated us.

More general info.

The chassis is completely manufactured in house and we have made a large investment in specialist tooling, machinery and facilities to be able to do this. We found that if the work were to be subcontracted out, because of the nature of the materials involved, we would be forced to deal with companies who manufacture F1 and Aerospace products which both attract high pricing. The idea was to keep it affordable.
The Chassis is available manufactured in Aluminium or Carbon Fibre in both right and lefthand drive.
Every single mounting and fixing point is factory installed to insure accuracy so that assembly by the home builder can be completed using only simple hand tools.
There is absolutley no welding, cutting or fabrication work required to complete the assembly. This is a fully developed product which is why we have taken so long to introduce it.
Every single part required for completion is available direct from Tornado Sports Cars and all items are supplied with all required fixings.
All mountings and fixing points replicate those found on our spaceframe chassis so that earlier cars can be stripped, have the chassis exchanged and be rebuilt with the original cars components.

We have 3 other projects using a Carbon Chassis under development at this time.
A single seat Hill Climb car which will be available in kit form, a 2 seat sports racer and another popular replica car for the road.

We have also been approached by another company to produce a chassis for them using our facilities.

Thanks

Andy
