A blast from the past

Here is a video of the sort of stuff I enjoyed when all the cars looked and sounded different. A classic race of a big banger versus a smaller nimble car. Also one of the reasons i bought a 2l Viva GT instead of an Escort Mexico. I was also a big fan of Vauxhall tuner Bill Blydenstein and the late great Gerry Marshall. I was always a fan of Special Saloons and Modsports and crazy stuff like Mick Hill's 8 litre Beetle and "Plastic" Pearson's Jag XK120. Anyway I hope you enjoy watching or re-watching this classic race.

I remember those days. I have a picture on my office wall of Dave Brodie's 'Run Baby Run' Escort. I use to do the signwriting and lines for Dave. Black with gold lines - before the John Player Lotus! I was a Brands Hatch when he broke the Special Saloon lap record.

Great days.

Brian.

A few pics of the sort of cars that had that certain something. They all looked and sounded fantastic. The Super Saloons, Modsports and the Wendy Wools championship cars were special, exciting and different. Open exhausts, screamers and big V8s and not an electric "milk float"to be seen. I am very glad to have been there to see them as I doubt we shall ever see cars like this again. Hope you like them as much as I do.

Cheers
Mike

Certainly not! I don't do milk floats.
BUT...... twice I nearly bought Ray Christopher's Mini that he built on a GTD chassis.

 One of the first car shows I went to was in Chard Somerset, and Cement T turned up, may even have been him driving it, certainly out shone the moggie 1000's with flames on the bonnet, and ford capri's with furry dice hanging from the mirror. I bought a reflective Avenger Sticker to make mine go faster :)

Good stuff Mike!

Great to see Crystal Palace, some superb racing and, of course, to hear Muffit Walker learning his craft of stating the bleedin' obvious whilst getting it all wrong and missing the action!
Definitely some amazing cars there.
Thanks for posting.

Hi Glenn,

Glad you liked the video and pics. Maybe I should post some more. I always liked the late, great James Hunt’s description of him as Muddley Talker! Classic.

What a great race ! thank you for sharing. I was glued!

Nice to see some old special saloons that I remember. The blue/yellow mk2 RS2000 with ABP sponsorship was my mate Bob Trotter`s car. He died a few years ago so nice to remember old friends, cheers Mike

This was my old Special Saloon Mini, raced mainly in the Hepolite Glacier championship in the early 70s.

Picture looks a little strange as it was lifted from some early 1971 cine film of Mallory Park paddock/race that someone sent to me.
