Hey Jimmy, that would be a shame but i understand your reasons. You could put a personal "watermark" on them though, I think most proprietary photo software suites offer this facility. There was a pro photographer who posted here not so long ago that had done this. Very effective and you could still view the pic OK. No way that they could be copied without everyone knowing they were pirated.

I sniped this item but lost the auction to someone for £ 97.50. Then today, I got a "second chance" offer at £ 95. I decided to check on the seller's feedback and found out he bought this same mirror for $16 in the USA. It was originally advertised as a mirror for a Jag Mk III.

Jimmy, I’m with Keith on this one.
I personally have really enjoyed and learnt heaps from discussions and photo’s that forum members such as yourself have contributed. Not to mention the numerous times that I would have been ripped off if I was not able to research the items on the forum before purchasing them. It would be a real shame if this type of input from knowledgeable members ceased. I hope there is a solution to the problem.

Keith / Pete,
There were two points in my short post.

The main issue for me, was that the item for sale was not the actual piece being sold as I have that under my bed.

The other point which you picked up on was that it was "ripped off" from one of the site's photos. I don't have time to research the guidelines on the ownership of photos posted on forums but I offered these up as assistance to save people a lot of time. I know what it's like.
Incidentally, I also note that the seller and original buyer appear to be members here and I recently sold full NOS sets of these knobs to a few members for only £30.

I am sure a lot of people copy this stuff for personal reference - that's what it's for, however since the material is available to those who decline a small donation to the site's upkeep, but can potentially still make profit from it, then I will think twice before any future input.

Fair points Jimmy and I suppose those members "know who they are", but I guess you'll never completely stop these kind of activities, especially in places where "Profit Rules". Shame really....

Different strokes for different folks I guess.....

First, let me say that I do little to no research on items I post from any eBay. I merely perform searches and then go through the items brought up and look for thing that, in my humble opinion, I think people can use or will be interested in. As you all have no doubt noticed, from time to time, I will include things from the auction like price, feedback percentage for seller, location of item or description text. I have NEVER sold anything on eBay either personally or through an agent.

That said, this is a good discussion and brings up a very salient point: as Ron Earp has pointed out, this is a free forum and, in this situation, that means self policing. None of us likes to be the bad a$$ or a snitch, but (again IMHO) I think we owe it to the community here to fully disclose the facts if any of us KNOWS that someone is attempting a fraud or rip off. While it may be hard to obtain absolute proof, if there is a high likelihood that someone is trying to pull a fast one, especially another member, take them to task for it! Jimmy Mac, I think you showed great restraint given the situation!

If there is a misunderstanding and the person wants to remain a member in good standing with the community here, he will explain the situation and be sure to make his intentions clear the next time.

Personally, I don't quite understand why I sometimes find articles for sale on eBay when they haven't been posted here. I do realise that some may have a primary or side business in dealing in vintage/performance parts, but that shouldn't have a bearing on things. Perhaps they would feel obligated to post items here at a lower price than they might expect to get on eBay or perhaps they feel that they would be taking advantage of thier membership here if they advertised thier auction items here as well. Either way, I believe openess would be received with understanding as we all know that there is profit motive throughout the industry which seeks to supply the automotive enthusiast. Without it, we would be hard pressed to find the parts and services we need to persue our pleasure. BUT, none of us wants to be gouged or our altruism to be taken advantage of either.

I didn't even think about this as My CAV HAS a rearview mirror; I thought it would be a neat touch for my personal satisfaction (I doubt most people would know what it was). It was one of the nice detail items I spotted when I parked next to a real one at Captree last year, along with the windshield defroster panel and zillion $ clip latches. Thanks to Lynn for spotting this mirror initially.

What's annoying is the second chance offer and the seller's feedback history. Obviously a real slick E Bay Capitalist P-g. I know, though, that some unscrupulous Ebay sellers will use sniping software under another user name (that bids maximum $ in the last seconds of the auction) to get max $ from legit bidders; then offers second chance offers to the next highest bidder. In effect, he could have input £300 as his max bid, and if someone was sniping the auction to a max of £200, still win the auction at £201, not consummate the purchase, then offer a second chance @ £200 to the 2nd highest bidder. Totally defeats the original purpose of sniping software: to prevent creeping bids during the duration of the auction. EBay really doesn't have any policy against this practice, as identities are simply backed by an e-mail address. Slick trick but...

I guess there will always be the enterpreneur who will surf enthusiast forums, capitalize on our passion, and make a healthy profit.
I wish there were more passionate enthusiasts like you who just want to share knowledge and enjoy the hobby. Sadly, being taken advantage of sometimes make us people we don't want to be...my wife says I've become an ornery bastid!

Whenever I clean up "inventory", I've always posted in the forums first before going EBay, usually for the cost of shipping. Better in use than gathering dust and rust in my shelf. But, I guess I won't get rich in this hobby!

BTW, I have a 650 Holley and SB manifold taken off when I installed the Webers if someone wants to pick it up. I don't even want to pack it.
