Sadly, this is the type of vehicle I think about when asked by an onlooker "is that a kit car?" when a person sees my car at an event. I do my best to explain that my car was built at a factory but eveytime I hear the question I shudder and an image something like this car appears in my head. I then wonder does my car in anyway resemble a car like this to this person. I'm not one to piss on anyones dreams as all our bank accounts have varying amounts in them but to think someone might put my car in the same "kit car" category as a car like this is admittedly deflating.

A poor car built poorly. :/

One plus point for the IVA/SVA in the UK is that similar terrible cars should be excluded from the roads. Sure there are some painful points (especially WRT the GT40 and originality) but generally I approve of the process. While I'm 99% confident in my own work there is always that niggle of "did I do it correctly?" and I'd rather someone else pointed out my mistakes than I find out the hard (and probably painful) way.

Back in the late 60's/early 70's there were few replicas made. There were a lot of VW pan builds, b/c that's sorta where the entire hobby started, with the Meyers Manx. I know, there were a few others earlier, but never economically successful.

If you wanted a GT40 "looking" car, you were pretty much limited to the Fiberfab Avenger (VW based) and Valkyrie (mid-engine V8). It was a Valkyrie on a used car lot in Denver, CO that introduced me to the mid-engine/transaxle drivetrain arrangement. 45 years later I'm still fascinated!

My fave was the Ferarri 246 Dino replication marketed by Kelmark (with a couple of others, a Karma and a Magnum, for competition). It was still usually VW based, but the Kelmark company did market a mid-engined V-8 powered version, hooked to an Olds Toronado automatic FWD transaxle...great for straight-line performance, but when you had to turn a corner, perhaps not so great....the Toronado transaxle required that the engine had to be mounted quite high in the chassis.

This version has been "cusomized" to reflect someone's view of what a GT racing car should be...what they did to the back end ought to be criminal, IMHO.

Anyway, I'm always happy to see the search bot bring one of these "oldie but goodie" versions to the forum, if for no other reason that to make me very thankful that modern repklicas are SO much better built and perform better (in many cases better than the originals).

Cheers!

Doug
