Ferraris on the Vine-Ford vs. Ferrari

The Williamsburg Winery will host the third annual Ferraris on the Vine, April 30 - May 1. The culmination of the weekend is the wine pairing lunch and exhibition on Sunday, May 1.

This Year's Theme
Offer the words “Ford” and “Ferrari” in the same breath, and car enthusiasts are flung-back to the heady days of the early 1960’s when an overture from Enzo Ferrari spawned a full effort by the Ford Motor Company to purchase the storied Italian brand. When Enzo reversed-field and terminated the talks, it incensed Henry Ford II to the point where he commanded his company to develop a race car that would be the iconic GT40, and take the fight to Ferrari where it’s stranglehold on sports car racing was absolute: The 24 Hours of Le Mans. Ferrari had won the most important sports car race in the world an unprecedented 6 consecutive years.

In 1966, after 2 ½ years of development by Holman Moody, the Ford GT40 Mk.II came through to a 1-2-3 finish in Le Mans with Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon piloting the winning car for the Shelby American race team. Ford, and the GT40, remains to this day the only company and car to win overall at Le Mans.

Guest of Honor
Our guest of honor for the weekend will be Lee Holman (at left). Mr. Holman was on the Holman Moody team for Sebring, Daytona and Le Mans in 1966 when their team car finished 3rd, following team orders to allow the Shelby cars to win.

Public Events
Saturday, April 30, 6:30-9:30PM – We will begin the evening with a champagne welcome in Wessex Hall. Guests will then enjoy a four-course gourmet wine pairing dinner among the Ferraris under the Big Tent. There will be a lively discussion focusing on Ford’s takeover at the 1966 Le Mans race, featuring stories from Lee Holman. A ticket for the Gala Dinner costs $110/person, and includes a take-away bottle of the exclusive Ferraris on the Vine 2007 Virginia Merlot.

Sunday, May 1, Noon-3:00pm -- On Sunday, we will host a wine pairing lunch, with six local restaurants presenting food tastings, each to be paired with a Williamsburg Winery wine. The Ferrari exhibition will be under a large event tent behind the Winery. We expect 20+ unique and wonderful Ferraris to be on display, along with an original Ford GT40. Also in attendance will be Foreign Cars Italia with exotics to test drive, and Tysinger Mercedes Benz, with their latest line of exquisite vehicles. There will be food and wine offerings under the tent, along with live music. A ticket for the wine pairing lunch and exhibition is only $25/person.
