    rear suspension setup

Reviving an old thread here because the question fits. The Alan Mann cars were reported to run less anti-squat than the original cars. Was this achieved by lowering the trailing link chassis mounts?

Torsional stiffness : Tube Steel Spaceframe

Having re-read my post, I should add a couple of points for clarification. 1. The 2x lbs to ft.lbs/deg figure is a rough estimate only and, may not give a CTSR of 4+ for all setups. My 'aim' point of 10000 ft.lbs/deg would mean a GVW:stiffness ratio of 1:4, double the rule-of-thumb. Many...

Torsional stiffness : Tube Steel Spaceframe

My last post was on this subject, back in 2009. Yes, I'm a lurker more than a participant these days as my main project is an SN95 Mustang Autocross / Open Track car. Anyway, I've watched the 'spaceframe' chassis conversation for years and there has been a lot of mis-information written on...

    Spaceframe Comparison

Paul, You're not changing the general focus of the thread. It's about good spaceframe design concepts for a GT40, and your input is good. It'd be nice if the other current producers had as much info to hand or were as open with it. Stew

    Spaceframe Comparison

Paul, I take it you meant kN/m per deg. Unless my French to English conversion is rubbish, that's 8830 ft.lbs per deg. I must admit that I find that figure astounding. Unless it's a mis-quote or mis-calculation, thats a very impressive stiffness from a partial spaceframe and I must...

    Spaceframe Comparison

Martin, Sorry, I forgot to compliment you on your car. Looks like it's coming along well. I look forward to seeing it on the road. I'm moving to Benson (south Oxfordshire) in June so won't be a million miles away from Southern GT so might pop down for a visit. Stew

    Spaceframe Comparison

Martin, To be honest, I'm a bit of a geek as well as a CARnnoisseur and I like to set up my cars and drive them hard. If I could afford it, I'd be doing what Iain is with his RF 117 down under. As it is, I built my Striker because it was the 7-esque car that won the most 750 Club...

    Spaceframe Comparison

Yes, I really like his RF. I don't really consider it an RF though as the chassis is effectively a one-off built around the RF base. Lovely machine though, I want one for my garage. I didn't include the DAX as I hadn't even thought of looking at it. Probably should have though. Cheers...

    Spaceframe Comparison

I've been looking at a lot of photos for ideas for a semi-monocoque scratch build chassis. I have seen many claims of "full spaceframe" and "fully triangulated spaceframe" but have yet to see either. Now I'm aware that it's next to impossible to produce a full conventional spaceframe that...

    UN1 Query

Stephane, Sorry, got my numbers a bit mixed. I've updated my spreadsheet to include the stock ZF box, optional FD and then a few Gulf racing setups. Cheers, Stew

    UN1 Query

Guys, I just thought I'd post some ratio, rpm and shift comparison info related to my initial enquiry. As you can see, the 2.66/1.75 upgrade gives the closest ratios to the ZF 5 DS-25-2 transaxle. 1st is still lower than the ZF but the ratios look like they're better all round for...

    UN1 Query

Ian, Drag racing - none! I wouldn't do that to a car designed for a much more civilised form of competition. Sprints/Hillclimbs - unlikely and if so, only rarely for a bit of fun. Circuit work - 4-6 track days per year with the option to do some racing if opportunity allows. Road...

    Ultima GTR vis GT40 Replica

Guys, It's all about tactics. Line up your 450hp GT40 next to your 450hp GTR and while the girls in the Bikini do the pre-race parade in front of the drivers, have your pit crew crawl up and release 10psi out of one of the GTR's rear tyres. Then proceed to open up a solid lead on lap...

    UN1 Query

Stephane, Thanks for the info. Just to ensure I've not got it wrong: Normal UN1 used for applications up to 35 kg.m (343 N.m or 254 ft.lbs) torque Venturi 260 used UN1 for application up to 41.3 kg.m (405 N.m or 300 ft.lbs) torque 400 GT used modified UN1 for...

To stroke or not to stroke, that is the question

For the same power, the 302 will be kinder to your transaxle (important if not modified on a UN1) than the 331 but be less streetworthy. Just a thought. Either one can be tuned to enough power to blow up the transaxle you're thinking of.

    UN1 Query

Guys, I'm just checking the points on UN1s that I've gleaned from the net and other posts. The 21 on (013) boxes are recommended as being the stronger ones. The turbo boxes have better gear ratios for road use. The Alpine boxes need to be inverted for use which would allow a lower...

    UN1 Rebuild

Guys, Just before anyone breaks anything, a taller final drive ratio will result in a higher torque loading on the gearbox, not a lower one. Changing from a 0.82 to a 0.76 final drive will stress the gearbox more, not less. Think of it this way, if you decrease the engine rpm at a given...

What is it about the GT40 monocoque chassis?

The mono is loved because it looks brilliant and is rarely attainable by those who want a replica. The other reason is that it is dynamically superior to a spaceframe if properly designed. The double D style mono used for the GT40 will produce a much stiffer chassis than all equivalent...

How difficult are 3U transaxles to find in the US?

No problem, I'll have a look around. If I find a supply, it'll probably be easier to ship a bunch together, but I'll look at the cost of getting them first. Stew
