Most Cost effective option for SLC

Hey there everyone,

So after speaking with Fran here recently, we wanted to put this out on the site here for public conversation and consumption.

For quite some time the ability to locate a good quality transaxle at a cost that would not break the bank has been something that many companies have been trying to find. We have a kit that some of you are already using in your builds, but we wanted to share it with everyone here, as well now that we are back in good standing again.

The G96 street car gearbox is a very well designed gearbox that has the added bonus of being quite cost effective. We have developed an adaptor kit, custom flywheel and complete kit that I think you will agree is a pretty darn good deal.

Currently we have access to new Factory Reman units, (new internals) at a pretty impressive price.

Here is the most cost effective kit that we have come up with to date. We have this gearbox in a test bed that is generating nearly 700 HP and so far it has held up just fine. We currently only recommend it for applications of 550HP or less, however, it does appear that it will handle quiet a bit more.

$4,600.00 Gearbox inverted ready for installation (open differential)
$1,800.00 Adapter kit with custom flywheel (for LS applications)
$1,169.00 Stage II clutch kit
$102.00 Bolt kit
$168.37 Slave cylinder

$7839.37 Total plus shipping.

Additional options that many go with as well are:

$2100.00 New OS Giken Limited Slip Differential installed
$220.00 Cooler in and out ports installed with fittings
$906.00 Pump, Cooler, Fittings, Filter, and 15 ft of Steel Braided Line

So even with all of the bells and whistles this is still a great option. I don't mean to leave any of the other manufactures out on this one, I am just unsure as to fitment in other cars at this point.

We always appreciate the opportunity to work with as many builders here as we can so please let me know if we can be of help answering questions, or supplying whatever you might be in need of.

Happy to help,

Looks like a real good deal there Erik
The use of OS Gikken products is a very good choice
The beauty of the G86 or G96 is that it is the right way up, compact, low diff and cheap as chips

Flatchat...maybe thats the Boxster trans you are thinking of..??...the one that Erik is talking about is the 911 based box I suspect as he mentions it being inverted..

Hmmm I wondered about that--
G86 , G96 /00 right way up, ex Boxster

G96/50 - G96/88 to be inverted --I think that they are a fair bit longer than the G50s tho ??

Now Alex, we all know they failed miserably in 935's. They were slow and ineffective machines. LOL....didn't they run 19's in the rear too :D 917's of course did little better with the lack of gearing also!

There is certainly nothing wrong with the 930 4 speed, other than it is a bit of a dinosaur now. The synchro technology makes it a bit difficult from a shift quality point of view, but you certainly can not fault the overall strength of these gearboxes for the most part, at least.

Just clarifying on the 930:
Pros:
Strong transmission
No need to regear (180+mph top speed at 6000)
Cheap(ish)

Cons:
Slow shifts
Hard to get into reverse
Long gears (bad for bumper to bumper traffic)

Is there anything else that is vital to the pros or cons??? I'm highly considering the 930 trans for the SLC.

930 box:

*Comes in multiple varieties so make sure what you are writing check for in the end.
*Short and long bell housing. If a G50 and Ricardo fit, then NO reason to pay premium for short bellhousing and leave them for us Porshce guys :) Or sell it to me and I'll provide a long.
*Light weight comparatively
*More access to local builders possibly since they've been around forever
*May want to drive a 915/930 syncro'd box before committing to this direction
*External oil coolers are handy yet not that hard to install with squirters
*Its not like a 4000lb muscle car with close ratio 4spd and no rear gear. The dif is geared decent, the cars are light, most of the LSx engines are cam'd for torque

Remember original 930's ran CIS, were only 3.0-3.3 liters, had compression levels that in reality were as low as 6.8:1 and weighed around 3200lbs. All these characterstics are being improved upon by swapping this transaxle into an SLC with a V8.
