Miami, FL: Rising Grand AM star Ryan Ellis and veteran Martin Jensen won the Kia 200 Grand AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, (CTSCC) Street Tuner, (ST) class race here at Homestead - Miami Speedway yesterday. It was the first series win ever for their team, Insight Racing, in just the team's second season.
Ellis started the Insight Racing BMW 128i in 11th place on a rain-soaked 2.3 mile track, charging through the pack to take the lead in less than 30 minutes time. Jensen, the accomplished road racer from Denmark, took over the helm after a tire change and delivered the win - overcoming several spirited battles for the duration of the race. It was the first race ever for the Ellis/Jensen pairing within the Insight Racing stable.
The win marked a return to Miami's victory lane for Ashburn, Virginia's Ellis, who won here last year and makes the youngster the winningest driver in the CTSCC ST series since he entered in 2011. The 2011 Grand AM ST Rookie of the Year is under contract with Insight Racing of Columbus, Ohio for the entire 2012 Grand AM CTSCC ST series. Ellis finished his rookie season in 3rd place in the ST Driver's Championship battle.
"It was great to get this win for the Insight Racing team today" commented Ellis. "They have worked so hard, and come so close, we weren't going to let this one slip away. Martin and I now look forward with great anticipation to the balance of the Grand AM season".
In addition to his Grand AM duties with Insight Racing, Ryan, 22, is campaigning in 2012 as driver of Race Car Replicas/Team Superlite Cars', (SLC) factory race team. Ellis won the NASA Super Unlimited National Championship for the team in 2011, and just last weekend shattered the Autobahn Speedway track record for the SLC race division at the metro Chicago road course.
Currently a senior at George Mason University, Ryan is also a professional racing instructor and a frequent host on CBS/WJFK's weekly “In the Pits” radio talk show.
