Apology

Ah, I see. Well, turnaround is pretty easy on this one. For something like 95-98% of us, the President's statement was correct, and for the other 5% (or less), well, the best that can be said for them was they were not paying attention. Because if they were, they knew minimum standards were coming.

So not sure where the foolishness really lies. Wait, yes I do.

Oh. And national healthcare? It seems that, well, just the entire rest of the Western, industrialized, world has a form of it and, get this, they (a) provide health care to their citizens at 20% or more LESS per capita than us; (b) their citizens are for hte most part happy with the care they get and (c) on the whole, their systems produce better results than ours.

It's more than 5%, and the president never mentioned "minimum standards". I guess it was in the 2100 pages that Pelosi stated we needed to pass so we could find out what's in it.

Most of the rest of the industrialized nations with nationalized healthcare are finding it unwieldy and unaffordable and are modifying it dramatically. Those patients that are "happy with it" are happy because they don't know any better. Those that can afford it go private. Their results aren't "better". Their health is better but that has more to do with social issues than with the quality. When I rotated at Oxford I was embarrassed to tell a patient they would be put on a waiting list for their total hip replacement and it would be 12-18 months. The patient was very accepting. In the US, that patient would have stormed out pissed as hell and gone to a competitor who would do it in 2 weeks. See how that works? Free market competition results in better service?

If you think the rest of the worlds health care systems are so great, you don't get out much and you haven't lived overseas. Access is sure good, but you might die before you get what you need. Of course, our govt is so smart I'm sure they'll figure it out:thumbsdown:

Gee, Howard...sorta hard to believe, huh?

He ran on the promise that he would institute universal health care. OK, so you don't like what he put in place, but he did it.

He said he would get us out of Afghanistan...and set a timetable that he's keeping.

He said he would eliminate the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in the military and allow the gay population to demonstrate that they, too, are capable of patriotism. Done.

Sorta hard to believe a politician who gets done the things he promises during the election campaigns, I agree :stunned:

Don't get me wrong....I'm not a died-in-the-wool Bee-Oh fan, but IMHO he's done the best job he could with the conservative efforts to tie everything up in partisan gridlock. What about the promises those TEA partiers made to their constituents, to represent THEM, not their own beliefs?

Who's lying?

No cheers for ANY OF THEM!!!

It's going to be interesting to see how many people actually enroll by November 15 when Sebelius promised to tell us, like they don't know now.

Why is it so wrong to attempt stopping a horrendously flawed program that is taking over one sixth of the US economy?

"We have to pass the bill to find out what's in it." Really?

Because in the entire history of the United States, there has never been an entitlement program that, once created, has been eliminated. Even if the program has been an absolute disaster. Think about that for a minute. Never. Why do you think that's the case? The only thing more addictive than heroin (and oreos apparently) is entitlements.

Obama Lies

I would just like to throw in a non specific comment here, nothing to do with Obamacare or anything, but in Western politics, if the electorates continue on the path of total disdain for different views, whichever side of the 'fence' one sits sit on, and even suggest publicly by public figures (as is happening in the UK) that the vote is a waste of time because ALL politicians are lying thieving scumbags, this is not, I would suggest, an ideal model or moral climate, for the education of the occupiers of tomorrow's world (our children) when we all have passed - we owe them more than that.

In short gentlemen, this kind of debate, especially when one considers that on one side at least, is the legally elected Government of the Day (whichever country you are in), you are staring down the barrel of the inevitable collapse of democracy. It may not be tomorrow, but this path will take you there.

At some stage, we will all have to take a leap of faith and work with what we have.

I include the growth of conspiracy theories as yet another nail in the great coffin of Democracy.

There, now you can have at it again, endlessly, remorselessly, and uselessly.

I agree Keith, we will all have to work with whatever lot is handed to us. There are many directions it all may take, and we'll all have to cope with what is dealt in our own way.

Well, in America's particular case Jack, I agree - it's your way or the highway and perhaps you should all keep your personal sidearms real close mate.....

The legacy being left our children is huge unsustainable debt bought about by Pollies of either side cynically buying votes by giving more and more handouts.
The much maligned Tea party has at least got one thing right, you cannot continue to kick the debt can down the road for future generations to fix.
The economy will collapse eventually and that is the legacy we are leaving.

And your suggested fix?

Because there seems no will to achieve common ground.

Perhaps if we banned the effing 'comedy' media and all their shit stirring divisive crap - progress MIGHT be made.

There will never be common ground if there is zero respect.

My fix, bring in a work for the dole scheme, young able bodied people doing community work instead of sitting on their lazy arses.
Stop foreign aid, all the countries you give aid to hate you anyway and charity begins at home.
Bring in drug tests before you get welfare, why should the taxpayer support your habit?
Do away with income tax and replace it with a transaction tax.
Cut government waste.
Bring the troops home and use them to secure your borders to stop illegal immigrants.
Pass a law that makes pork barreling illegal .
That will do for a start.

Yes, but he would lose the next election if he bought in any of those suggestions
And so they won't happen. One of the flaws of democracy people getting handouts vote too. Hang on:idea:

Why would he lose? Are you saying that your thinking is in a minority in Australia? Or no-one else can be bothered?

We have the same issues here, so basically, you're saying that the underachievers, benefit thieves, illegal immigrants and plain crooks have effectively overthrown or at least completely undermined the democratic process in Oz to the point that honest people have given up?

That's appalling surely? But that was exactly my point about Western style Democracy and where it's heading.
