German pilots must have been dumber that door knobs. There's NO WAY to confuse one ship for the other.

Perhaps their judgment was impeded by the tracer rounds coming at them! I would venture many pilots on both sides decided "looks close enough for me!" and pulled the trigger. Adrenaline will do that!
