driving lights

What size and shape driving light/turn signal is everyone using? What size were the originals?
How about the round ones on the Gulf cars? What diameter were they?

Thanks,
Ron

I can't find any domestic "buckets" for driving lights, ones that allow flush mounting of the light and provide screw adjustments for aiming, just as you would aim a headlight. Are there any out there that we know of?

Thanks .I was looking for a rectangular light though.

All the people on this list with GT40s and not one person can post a picture of a driving light with a measurement?/ /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The most common configuration is the rectangular driving and/or fog light above the round park/turn light.

www.rallylights.com

has the Hella FF75 driving or fog

and the Optilux 2000 series fog/driving combo light

both measure about 6" x 2" which fits pretty well, but

both are sort of between oval and rectangle

These are high performance lights.

www.cobraaccessories.com

has the front running/signal lights, 2-3/4" round orange

These are straight from the NAPA parts store. ~$20 Approximately 6" x2.5". The turn signals are Lucas L488 units. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

notes on driving lights - might be of some use

The lights fitted to my GT40 1041 are made by lucas and they are 115mm (4.52”) by 55mm (2.17”).
I have heard the lights were Cibies but my parts manual shows them to be Lucas.

www.rallylights.com has the Hella FF75 driving or fog. The lamp measures 120mm (4 11/16") wide and 88mm (3 7/16") high and the Optilux 2000 series fog/driving combo light (couldnt find the Optilux) measuring about 6" x 2" which fits pretty well, but both are sort of between oval and rectangle. These are high performance lights.

These are straight from the NAPA parts store. ~$20 Approximately 6" x2.5". (couldnt find these either)

Valeo, is now the parent company of both Marchal and Cibie
Valeo direct is on 01233 822 580 (in UK). Those original Marchals are model number 653 but 656 look the same but with Halogens fitted. They also used them on the little European Ford Capris in the 60's. Having spoken to Valeo - they recommend the Hella FF75.

I am still wating for MDA and Tornado to come back to me.

Dear Richard. I was interested in your mention of your GT40 1041.

Do you own GT40 P1041

All the best Ron.

I Wish.

No - I just posted extracts from info I have found on the web and forum. I have a replica (GTD) of 1038.

Hi Guys, I bought some driving lights, look real similar to Neals (rectagular)and 20 bucks also. They have 55 watt halogen bulbs in them. Has anyone had a problem with the heat these type lights give off ? I could always go to a lower wattage bulb, I just want to make sure I want to use them before I cut the holes,LOL .I was going to flush mount them with the surface and leave a little gap around the lenses for clearance. Any Thoughts Appreciated. Dan

Ron - Get in touch with Andy (Charley Farley)

Dan - For what it's worth, I have found 55W to be a little on the slim side when it comes to lights (which may help to explain the advanced years and declining eyesight). I'd suggest considering higher wattage; you may be able to mitigate the additional heat with a vent in the top side of the enclosure. Just a thought.

Best to all,

T.

Pantera Ron,

Above Lucas turn signals are standard sized Optilux fogs. I have some plain H4 ovals mountied in the tops of the radiator side nostrils. BTW, it is my understanding that the round driving lights on the JW/Gulf cars were an aircraft landing light. We had a pretty extensive thread on this several years ago. Do a search on landing light and you should be able to come up with some info.

Regards,
Lynn
