...'had a flashback and got to wondering:

What car did you (the collective "you"!) drive to your high school reunion (or prom for that matter) 'back in the day' that caused a stir/raised eyebrows/evidentially made quite an impression like Frank and his grandson Louis did arriving in his GT40 - OR that someone else arrived in that you still can't get out of your head to this day? Which reunion was it (10th...20th...30th...what?)...what was the car...and in what calendar year was the reunion held? The latter question 'asked simply to provide the rest of us with a bit of perspective as to the degree of 'WOW!' factor the car must have had.

This isn't intended to be a competition or an exercise in one-upmanship! 'Just curious to hear some of the stories! There must be a trainload of 'em in this group!

Anyone...?

Well, Larry, I can't tell you what car I drove to my high school prom- simply because we did not own cars in my high schools. Those prom locations were unusual, though; in my sophomore year in Heidelberg our prom was held in the "Schloss", the old castle overlooking the city. My junior and senior Frankfurt American High School prom was held in the "Casino", a former German officers' club near the huge I.G. Farben building in Frankfurt. Later on, the Casino was blown up by the Bader-Meinhoff gang.

Going to high school in Germany had some advantages; such as running around the Nurburgring in a friends '48 Mercury and attending the German Grand Prix there.

I was fortunate enough to drive a 1964 E-type jaguar convertible to my HS prom. My Dad and I had bought it a couple years earlier and completed a very nice driver restoration on the car by the time of the prom. It was a LOT of work....we did all the work ourselves....rebuilt the engine and rear suspension, did the body work and painted it, interior work and a new convertible top. The only thing that was sent out was a few bits to be re-chromed. It was a stunning car when we finished the project.

Made quite a stir at the prom. My date was very impressed.

Drove my Mom’s 1969 Cadillac Sedan Deville which I think it had a 472 Cubic Inch Engine. Under 10mpg for sure. It was quite the car back in 1979. No stir, but wish we still owned it,

Never made it to prom.
Actually, I left HS in the fall of my senior year to enlist in the military with some grandiose idea of winning the unwinnable war in Vietnam.

Back then I was into bikes so had not yet taken my car licence!
I did have a provisional car licence and a mate also a biker had his car ticket so could sit next to and supervise my driving.

So I got the use of the family car a BMW Cheetah, predecessor to the 2002. So not a spectacular car!

I have though taken a groom to the church in the GT40 for his wedding, he was in full military dress uniform complete with sword! It was fun getting that into the ‘40. Car got lots of photos outside the church and I then took his father from the church to the reception venue!

Different time and groom!
Also let my car be used as a wedding leaving car for bride and groom, thank goodness it was a long private drive on a stately home as I am sure they were both over the limit!

I did two other Prom deliveries in a 40, both very pretty girls ! The first involved dropping a girl at the Grand Hotel in town, and found a very fierce looking policeman at the drop off point making sure none us got illegal, particularly as we drove away ! Was not my car, so - sod it - dropped the clutch at max torque and left two very black lines across the hotel forecourt --

M'gosh..........................'sure turned out to be a darned short "train", didn't it?! I would have thought there'd have been more! I'm thinking some of you are just 'shy'!

Any others?

Cliff:

Speaking of XKEs; 'saw a grey, late 1960s roadster - top down - on the freeway yesterday. They haven't lost a thing in the stunning department.
