Mating an O1E Transaxle with a 302SBF

Hi Guys

Currently researching the ideal Transaxle to use with a 302SBF Stroker.

What modifications would be required (if any) and also could you recommend, a supplier of a Bellhousing/Adapters etc, to get this to work.

Any optional Transaxles to consider would be appreciated.

If its too much messing around, then I may well just go the Quaife route, whilst quite expensive, its bombproof.

Thanks in advance

Kennedy Engineering-adapter plates, clutches, flywheels and starters for many different engine types.

Dave, do not believe the Quaife is bomb proof, do your homework first, they can be a very expensive error

I have an O1E and a 302Windsor in my car, adaptor supplied by RF. As this is a common option I'm sure that there are many suppliers that can help.
Cheers

Frank,

Thanks for the heads up.

I am interested to understand why you believe that a Quaife is not suitable, for my application ?? Is it based on personal experience?

There are also Renault, Audi and ZF Transaxles, as well as RBT DS-25/2 in USA that I have also considered.

Any further input from yourself, as to your previous statement, would be appreciated.

Thanks

David

Porsche G50. Used in the Ultima. Needs to be inverted. We have one up here that has been taking 500 ft.lbs. for over 20 years including track and hillclimb.

Ya, I would consider a G50 Porsche. Lots of them. Lots of Porsche GRBX rebuild shops, Lots of uprated parts available. Multiple gear ratios available for retrofit. Porsche used these in 911's for something like 10 years and made 10s of thousands a year.

I have one in my SLC behind a 475ish HP SBC 350. Seems to not object to the power. I like them because they can be uprated to take +500HP, are not overly heavy, good overall length, clutches and assorted pieces readily available, several different proven shifter systems, well known and proven method to invert and proven in many mid engine builds.

The other stuff like adapter plates are available from several sources, Kennedy did mine and have been helpful thereafter. There are also a few different type limited slip designs in use. I have a Quaife TBD in mine and I think it is the best money I every spent.

All in all an effective choice in many respects.

The 01E is a compact and cost efficient transaxle for a 302, and it also weighs less than other choices. About 115lbs with shifter mechanism. Either limited slip or torque bias diffs are available, and not expensive. It also shifts pretty easily with not a lot of effort required. Adapter plates are available from Kennedy and others. Scott at Advanced can put one together for you which can handle the power of a 302 without any issues.

It's a good choice if you're looking to lose weight and spend well less than $10K for your transaxle configuration.

I've heard the 01E can raise the engine 2". If so will this cause clearance issues with snake exhaust on a 351W engine in a RCR chassis?

Thank you!

Hi Louis, I'm back in my workshop all weekend. Will measure my engine setup heights ZF vs UN1-13 vs O1E 6speed from bottom block 351W/C to floorplan on my SGTs. Then you have a rough idea of Audi box height issues. Mk2 have more height clearance, so you might be ok with Audi.

Ok so here it goes 351W/C
Height from floor to bottom engine block/to of oil pan
ZF 6.5"
UN1-13 is 8"
Audi O1E was 10"
Measurements ZF & UN1-13 taken from my SGT40s, O1E from another make...
Not sure of G50 height though:)

Mk1 pics 351W to UN1-13
Mk2 pics 351C to RBT ZF
So you can calculate alittle then:)
351W is very tall and tight under Mk1 rear clam. Look at bulkhead window to estimate your RCR.
Best of luck mate:)

Yes, will almost fry the fiberglass. It will drop 1.5 in once the ZF is dropped in, now its mated to the UN1-13.

In regards to the Audi 01E Transaxle; its input shaft is above the output drive shafts, so it must push the whole engine / transaxle up high to avoid excessive driveshaft angularity. The Porsche G50 is the same as the Audi in standard form; however, as the Porsche G50 transaxle is inverted for mid-engine application the output drive shafts end up above the input shaft. The end result is that a Porsche G50 allows a much lower mounting of the engine / transaxle whilst still ensuring good output shaft angularity. (This is especially good for those running 351 Windsors or Clevelands)
