Were your stainless back plates part of the lightning catch, or did you make them?
There might be more of these Lightning catches at Thunder City in South Africa, as they don't fly their lightnings any more due to a crash. I bought some lightning tyres from them a few years ago for a land speed record car project.

I got mine from a guy breaking Lightnings in the UK, which I've always been chuffed about as I think they're fantastic aircraft. I flew in one from Thunder City a few years ago... that was an incredible experience!

I got a batch of 16 and Graham got someone to put on the stainless backing plates, Graham has 8 of them and I gave 4 to a friend who is rebuilding a Mk III near to me and 4 for me (Im NOT building another one!!!). You don't have any spare 'latches' or a source for them??? I need 8....

The French SARMA latch which Brian is using is high quality and is pretty close to the true Hartwell.
They are cheaper than the Hartwell and available occasionally on flea bay. (there is a pair on there now but quite a bit dearer than usual)
I do like that secondary red lock button.

I have made my backing channels in CR steel for yellow zinc plating later.

Sorry Andy, I don't, as Jimmy suggests my Sarma latches came of Ebay.com I think I paid $50 each but they might not fit your latches exactly?

I have some of these that I am going to use for parts, as they are almost identical, I need to drill out the rivets, so they come apart machine off the ears and add a stainless bracket to the back, Well that is the plan.....View attachment 110979

I was lucky enough to score a set of these latches for my GT. I left the ears in place and cut slots for them in the relief wells in the clips. Seemed to work pretty well!
I might have updated my build blog and logs here

The ones that are in my build diary are from a Tornado fighter jet. There is a number of cowlings all the way along the top/centre section of the body. All of these are affixed with curved Hartwell latches. They are slightly different to the originals. I am hopeful that I can use the springs and the push buttons to make some functional latches.

Mine were from a Provost Tornado Jet cowling. The seller had at least one more of these as well as some others.

I think the cowling i got was the the one right in the center that has the little silver aerial on it, just aft of the black circle.

What does the bottom parts of your latches look like. (side profile)
I see there is an extra spring arrangement in the top boxes 'neath the "press" lever so can you tell me what it does ?
