Chris`s GT40 journey..

First infectted with this Icon, i was only 6 by my father... With 16, so ten years later it stands in our garage it was an MK1 with Hermsen frame and ZF 5 ds25, just brutal in sound and drive... We have had much fun with it in the following years. The Icon in Gulf colors. I was able to drive it my ow starting when I was 18 - allways under the eagleeyes of my father ;-) .. After 10 years it was lost due to life surcumtances. At that day i told my father - Time will come and I bring it back better than it was....

Time has come...

In the following i show where i started two years ago... it was an frame found in the web, and it was as bad as it could be... so the journey begins - Make me own way

I want to create an spaceframe chassis as backbone, than covered with panels and elements to look like an original MK1.
The main chassis will be 35x35 mm Steeltubes (wallthickness 2 mm), the rest frame will be smalersizes, depending on load / use - as possible.

This is where i stay now... Hope you like it....

Chris

By the way and sure off topic here... As for me racecar legends like the GT40 are legends. I got one more :), (or more..) loved cars, wich should be build in my shop.. the one is a Porsche 908/3 for wich iam nearly ready to go lasercutting the frame, the bodybuck is made from woodparts. Engine will maybe an Subaru-Boxer later...

..... This could happen, when the love becomes somekind of religion :p:p:p

But back to my GT40 after this short exit to Porsche...

The next days I will write up some questions here, wich are needed to finalise my GT40 Design.

And I hope Iám right here, and get some advices /help.

Thanks and an nice evening to all

Chris

Yes, I have one of them, couldn't remember which # one it was (its the front one). Wish I had a copy of the back one. Spent many an hour looking a photos of that one. Still not sure i have it 100% correct. Need to move on. Good to see someone else giving it a crack.

Heres 2176 drawing for you. In technical description is listed, that is`t front and rear Panel Horseshoe

I don't want to detract more from your build thread Chris.
I would probably go for a larger sized tube that 35mm. Possibly 40 or even bigger if you are going to use tubing.
Have you seen the MDA chassis and the ERA chassis. They both take heavy inspiration from the original Monocoque. The MDA had a fair amount of tubing in it as well.

Ryan

Hi, all okay !

I think this forum is to discuss, and when advices come it`s great for all..
the Hermsen-chassis we had was also using 35 mm tubing and other sizes, so i think it will work

Hi Chris,

Ok, I know that I would need to pass a torsional chassis rigidity test. The 40mm tube say in 2mm wall thickness would likely provide a stiffer chassis than a 35mm tube in a 3mm wall thickness, all for the same weight. I was going to go with 1.6mm for my tube sizes but I had not verified that with any calculations or analysis and i know that some of the other local chassis use a stiffer tube, so i am not sure how it would have gone from a stiffness perspective.
Your CAD model looks great. Where do the body model come from. What software are you using.

Ryan

Hey ryan, this is an good perspective, i think about the 40/40 mm!
The rough body is from Grabcad, it is not in right scale, so you have to bring it to scale! ....

I use Fusion360 for 3D drawing

Chris

Hi everybody,
today I need an advice/help from you.

Can someone, who is building with an TORNADO / SouthernGT BODYKIT the dimension of the roofsection marked with an "A"
I need it to finalise my drawings and for a check, if mine is right...

I only ask for Tornado /SouthernGT as they are in europe, and i saw they are selling bodykits :)

THANKS SO MUCH FOR HELP
chris

you have obviously found the drawings on grab cad.
add the width of the floor pan + 2 times the width of the side sill together, and that should give you the measurement you need for the outboard width of the chassis side sills.

Yes the bodyhull is one from GrabCab.
But only to count the Floorpan and 2 times the sidesills will in my eyes not work.

As the roof section is wider than the sidesills. Pls see pictures from Mono. chassis. As Iam working on original measures, i need to know how much the with of the roof realy is . Look at the pic, with the red markings.

thanks
