How to determine which make / brand GT40?

Is there a list of features somewhere already made that would allow me to identify which brand of GT40 I'm looking at?

Or is the only way to actually open the car and look for the name plate, logo, or other identifiers?

I don't want this for one particular car, but rather any while I'm looking / shopping.

Thank you ...

Bodywork, airducts and location of these, windshield and size of this to A pillar, front & rear body latches, wheels bolton Granada or Knockoffs centerbolt, dashboard, center handbrake or under dashboard, rear bulkhead window, gearbox from rear view, wheel stance.... convex lines on rear bodywork blending into centersection. Suspension if you csn see it.

The list goes on and on,way to much to go through really.

The only way to be sure, is to take pictures and ask here, unless the seller is a member of this community and knows what he's selling.

In this community, most GT40's real & replicas are known.

Most replicas won't show their true origin on a vin tag / name plate. Most kit cars came without a tag.
It took me a year to find out, I have a KVA "B" type chassis. It took me almost three years more to figur out I have a GTD mk2 body sitting on that chassis.

Most manufacturers do use some form of unique chassis identifier or VIN# as a first start, but it's often knowing where to find it! SPF, CAV, ERA should be easy to segregate out by chassis #, even my old KVA had a chassis number once I knew where to find it! It's the more obscure and older or scratch builds that might take some detective work.

Thanks guys. I assume there's no good reason to try to assemble such a list, or it would've already been done. Seems do-able, with some effort, just prob not much demand for it. Thank you ...

Hallo aus Berlin
I had the same question in mind when I entered this page … where can I find out which numbers are used on original cars, is there a specific number sequence? As I understand the VIN of replicas is used from other older FORD-models?
Thank you for any help …

A fundamental component of your search is whether the car is a tube/space frame clad in metal or a true monocoque tub chassis. There are only a couple true monocoque based replicas you would encounter: Superformance (their car SAYs Superformance on it), ERA, or RCR. Each are very unique in their design and look. I am of course excluding a REAL 40 or a one-off built tub car such as Holman Moody, SAFIR or Gelscoe. Once you see one, you will know them in the future. You can search the forum here to see what each looks like. As for tube/space frame cars, there are several as well: GTD, Tornado, Southern, etc. Once again, these all have differences but HARDER to tell apart once they are clad in sheet metal (if they are). I believe that if you are in the market for a 40, you first have to decide if you want space frame or monocoque. Then look deeper into each manufacturer. And then even deeper into your wallet as the monocoque cars are higher in price (at least they should be) but now with prices so high, it is not uncommon to see prices sky high for just about any car. Any true owner should know what the hell their car make is and be honest about it. Once again, with the market where it is, I see people selling cars and have zero clue what make it even is.

„ I see people selling cars and have zero clue what make it even is.“ … exactly!!!! i asked a few guys about the cars they are selling, and they cant or dont want telling about the True history…often they show papers of registrations that fit not to the Car.

Thanks a lot, your Description helped me much!

You can see the differences in bodywork, chassis, suspension, interior. Lots of signs as to what make it is.

I see people selling cars and have zero clue what make it even is.
Or they know exactly what it is and bend the truth in the hope of making a sale.
Case in point is the one that Shannon's have up for auction at the moment. If you listen to the video, a lot of what is said sounds incorrect to me.

…and this is a Car offered to me as „1968 GT40 original from Ford“. What do you think?

GTD immediately came to mind.
Their original exhausts we’re as in those photos, not cross over, rear suspension and framework and the prominent ridge at the top of the door /roof section.

Yes. GTD. The non crossover exhaust manifold is clearly GTD. The ridge at the rear of the top of the side window is also GTD. The BF Goodridge tyres were often fitted to GTDs back in the day (and are poor). The cable gearchange is also GTD.
The chassis number is stamped into the thick square tube above the steering rackon the right hand but side but it may well be covered by the aluminium panellling. GTDs sometimes have the chassis number stamped into the metal angle which carries the gearbox mounts at the very rear of the car ( mine does)

129.000€ for a „1968 GT40 original from Ford“ is extremly cheap and you should buy immediately ;)

However, 129K€ for a GTD in questionable condition.....

Anyway, I think sometimes it is a little more complicated - especially in countries where a registration is hard to obtain.
Some of the early cars are now 40 year old and changed owners several times. Sometimes the original owner dies and whoever is the the new owner very often has no f... glue what they are selling....

Don't get me wrong, I don't support people which advertise with false information and scumbags which do this on purpose is a different breed anyway.

Bottomline, for such cars the buyer needs to know, do his homework (thanks to GT40s.com :)) or bring somebody who knows.

I know the owner of the original GT40 p1083. Although this one really looks like the original, it is definitely not. I think GTD is probably correct. I have numerous photos of the original.
