Window/headlight cover material

What’s the best material to use to make side windows and headlight covers from? Is 1/8” thick suitable?
Thanks
Simon

I've got some 2mm perspex to make my light covers if I go down that route, the only thing putting me off slightly is the time consuming process of having to make the aluminium, bucks to heat form the covers over

I have tried to make headlight covers for my Lola T70 replica using 1/8th Acrylic sheets and was not able to successfully form them. The Lola headlights are larger and more curvaceous than the GT40.
From my mistake I have learned that Lexan, Not Acrylic, is necessary for molding to the curved headlight shape. I have not tired it yet as I have decided to just purchase pre-formed lenses.
But 1/8th Lexan seems to be the right material if you want to give it a try. It is very difficult to evenly heat the material without causing any part to overheat and bubble. You will most likely need an oven.

Andy, I have a pair of aluminium “forms” that were used to make covers for a previous car. If they work ok you’re welcome to borrow them

I would check if I were you but motorsport regs for side windows might be 4mm minimum? Doesnt matter if you dont do motorsport. I might have got that wrong so please check

Hi guys, I still make the headlight and running light covers (over 20 years now) out of crack proof plastic. I've made them for all replica makes and some original cars such as prototype GT103. Email me at: [email protected] so I can send photos and details. Also, feel free to call anytime at: 816-286-6982 to talk about your car and the light covers. I'm asking $150USD/set of four covers shipped in the US and $180/set of four to overseas.
Thanks, Mark Clapp

We are also able to supply full sets of headlight covers, spot light covers and side windows.
The side windows are available with a choice of plastic or Aluminium flap hinges and catches that are very similar to those used on original cars.
In addition we are also the only supplier of a curved rear window in plastic which eliminates the all to common rear window sag issue.
Thanks
Andy

Hello, I have a GTD from 1991. I bought the 2 mm covers from Tornado for the light covers some weeks ago and after some adjustments I was able to fix them. They were bigger, no holes, no painting.
I put a screw on 2 as I think it gives a better look. I was looking to fix them without any effective screws but I didn't succeed.
For the windows and turn light covers I did them by myself with a 3mm polycarbonate thickness. Even if they were flat, it fits well for my eyes.
For your information, Franck from France
