To order pin drive or not to order pin drive...that's the question.

My car is in the works at Active Power and I've been contemplating wheels for a while now. Chris is going to ship it with a set of junkyard wheels and tires on it since the wheels I choose will more than likely need to be painted black or dark gray prior to mounting tires. I'll probably be going with E-T Mags wheels 18" AC III's. I worked with them for the set that is on my 66 fastback and am happy with the quality and service. Just looking for thoughts on whether to go pin drive or not. I will eventually track the car periodically (for fun). Thoughts?

My opinion, for what it's worth, if you're not going the traditional, period correct 15" wheels, there's no good reason to go with pin drives.

I guess I am going somewhat "traditional"...as far as a guy with a GT40 on the outside, and a corvette inspired chassis beneath the skin can get.

I personally like pin drives especially considering the number of times I had my rear wheels on and off while modifying my suspension to get my tires under the bodywork.

It's up to you but there were only ever pin drives in my future.

If you do bolt on, please don't attach the cover that makes them look like center locks. If you're making a choice to not have center lock wheels, it seems a little odd to then try to make it look like you have them.

I understand when people are required to fit bolt on due to regulatory requirements, but if it's a free choice situation, just let it ride.

I was calling it non traditional because of the 18" wheels. With that, you've gone rouge in many people's eyes already.

But I completely agree with not faking. Don't put those huge bibmo covers on OEM calipers either.

BTW, I'll be going 18" wheels with 14" rotors too.

I got my new quote from Image and did a price comparison. On a per wheel basis (with pin drive), Image is about $650 more per set, as compared to ET. The price difference comes from a more expensive adapter set up from Image.

18” et mags bolt on with willwood brakes. Love the look of the bigger rims and not crazy about the pin drive setup. When i was building my cobra this was the big decision for me for the first time and i decided on bolt on aswell. I have a tendency of having different sets of wheels for my cars and bolt on opens up to a larger variety. That is my opinion on it atleast lol Whatever makes you happy is all that matters.

I've been following your build. My car is currently getting the body fit for delivery after the 1st of the year.
Are your wheels bolt-on with covers?

Yes, Chris supplied the wheel package. If your getting your own wheels, Bob at vintage wheel is great to deal with aswell. I bought quite a few wheel packages from him for my cobra. If i couldnt get the 18” with chris i was going to use vintage again.

I had looked at Vintage, but for some reason was thinking they didn't offer 18". I'm looking at getting either black, or dark gray wheels. Image will do theirs in satin black.

They have any size&width you need. They did a set for my cobra 17x8.5 front 18x12.5 rear

I spoke with Bob at Vintage yesterday. He said they can get me the sizes I need and can look at brake diagrams to make sure there will be clearance. Price for Vintage nearly the same as Image all in...just a different style. I think I would feel a little more comfortable doing business on this side of the Atlantic.
.....and I don't do Cobras!
