    Alternative Energy Sources discussion

Thorium has been around a long time. When it's cheaper than coal, LNG, solar, wind, and hydro, plants will be built. Until then, it's not commercially viable.

Just to reiterate, US military reactors are probably the safest in the world. Not sure there has ever been a significant accident?

The military does, yes. Public and private utilities? Not so much. That said, my guess is the small scale nuke is probably the only way forward with them. The smaller scale does save some money. But even the smaller ones (see the article posted above) just are too expensive versus other...

    Alternative Energy Sources discussion

What is it with the American "Conservative" fascination with shitting on renewables? I'm pro nuke, pro clean coal, realize a balanced grid is the solution. I don't spew nonsense anti-renewable talking points. Yes, of course, te size of a windfarm or a solar farm contributes to its cost. Duh...

    Alternative Energy Sources discussion

Wrong. Swedes? Shutting down nukes. Germany? Same. Brits and Germans? Off shore wind. You didn't even read that article: Nuclear plant construction is currently underway in only three EU member states – Finland, France and Slovakia. These construction projects have all experienced cost...

    Alternative Energy Sources discussion

Just to expound, solar and wind are relatively easy to install. Hydro a bit more complex (check out the Muskrat Falls disaster in Labrador!). Wind is really split into two types for cost purposes - -off shore is expensive, on shore much less so. Wind and hydro have permitting and regulatory...

    Alternative Energy Sources discussion

No worries. A nuke plant even putting aside regulatory costs is just big and complicated and very very expensive. Plus, off shore wind, on shore wind and solar cost per kW hour is dropping. I can't say I know for sure the specifics other than what I state above -- renewables cost going down...

    Alternative Energy Sources discussion

I'm pro nuke. Nukes AREN'T the answer because of cost. On shore wind, coal, LNG, hdyro, all much cheaper and WAY cheaper if you include shutdown costs. Removing some of the reguatory barriers on nuke construction and decommisioning would help with costs, but not enough to make them work...

You're in the US. It's skeptical here. Sceptical in the UK/Down Under.

Electric Vechicles Are Here - The world is rapidly going to S#@!

I'm 52. Seen quite a bit. I've heard that the government was going to ban high horsepower cars since I was a kid. Hasn't happened. Guns. Hasn't happened. Fast food. Hasn't happened. That's one thing I've learned from the past, is that there is a broad swath of America who is easily...

Why are old white people so scared of so many things? Sad way to live.

Electric Vechicles Are Here - The world is rapidly going to S#@!

That headline is just wrong: 1. After 2035, all new vehicles will have to be zero emissions. Not "no ICE vehicles." 2. It does nothing about existing ICE vehicles. Quote from the Executive Order: The executive order will not prevent Californians from owning gasoline-powered cars or selling...

Electric Vechicles Are Here - The world is rapidly going to S#@!

I work for an electrical transmission and distribution company. We just put together a white paper on using dead EV batteries -- which aren't really "dead" just not efficient enough to be used in an EV -- as battery storage on the grid.

Wrong. Put your money where your mouth is. $10,000 says ICE vehicles are not outlawed. The outlaw crowd is way smaller than you think. Plenty of people fully believe ICE and EVs can and will exist side by side.

Electric Vechicles Are Here - The world is rapidly going to S#@!

The anti-progress crowd will go on and on about a few fires and an allegedly (I work in transmission and distribution, the grid will adapt and be fine) weak power grid to prattle on about electric cars. The reality is there will always be ICE motored vehicles for you to enjoy. Hell I still...

Tell everyone every week that you are surviving this COVID19. Just add your name to the list once a week and each of us will know if you are alive.

Damn, hang in there Mr. Morton. You are a tough'un. Doing well here in the US. Crazy times and the virus remains rampant but friends and family are healthy.
