289 water passages

I have been told that there are water passages in the heads of a 289 that do not have openings onto the earlier (1965-66) blocks. My understanding is that there is a template for locating the right position to drill these openings into the block and improve cooling. Anyone familiar with this procedure?

Bud,
seems if you need to know about an American engine on here you need to ask an Englishman !

You don't need a template, lay a head gasket on the block, you are dealing with both front cylinders, # 1 and # 5. At the top ( pushrod side )of the cylinder ( and all other cylinders ) there are two small round openings in the gasket at about one o'clock and eleven o'clock. For # 1 cylinder drill an 1/8 th hole into the block through the one o'clock hole ( the one nearest to the front )_ for # 5 cylinder, again, drill through the one o'clock hole, in this case the second from the front.

Easy Peasy. !

Mike
