Alloy cylinder head recommendations

I plan on having built a neutral balance 347 Windsor. A Scat crank has been mentioned, and alloy heads strongly recommended.

Not looking for a high HP motor, but driveable and quick enough not to disgrace itself on the road - 300HP?

I would appreciate any thoughts on alloy heads. I'm not wealthy, so economy is a good thing. I guess value for money is the key.

Working with a later model 302 block (96?).

AFR heads are the bomb. 205s on my 363ci and 535hp. However, if you're looking for 300hp, Edelbrock Performers are pretty good and much less expensive. You also don't need a 347ci for that HP. If you go with less stroke you can lower piston velocities and get a bit more reliability.

I read one of these tests (although they did it on the dyno) several years ago and based on those findings I bought AFR heads. They do cost more, but my experience with their company was very good. For what you want, you may be able to get equal bang for the buck, or better, with Edelbrock. AFR also used to make heads for Holley, which were very good as well, but I don't know if they still do. If Holley still sell heads, they may not be AFRs.

The Comp Cams website used to have lots of articles with ally head comparison dyno tests. The AFR heads usually came out on top. The Edelbrock Performer RPM are probably the best value in hp per £$ and are easy to get hold of. A 302 with road cam and Performer RPM heads and inlet, 650cfm Holley and a road cam does 335hp on the dyno. The Performer RPM Air Gap inlet is even better.

I'm pretty sure Brodix is the company that does the Ford Holley heads, not AFR. I was just reading a thread on another forum a few weeks ago from someone who used to work for Brodix commenting on the design.

I know AFR did them years ago, at least they told me they did. But Holley would get them from whoever gave them the best deal; I am sure they are just a standard design relabeled, not a custom design for Holley. So it may very well be Brodix that is making them now.

Whatever happened to Brownfield?

Brownfield was started by one of the original partners in AFR, they split up to do do their own thing. The AFR partner, who was really still a specialist porting shop bought out Brownfield sometime in the eighties and they morphed into AFR alloy heads.
We had some on a CAN AM car sometime in the seventies, they were considered a bit more road racey than the oval tracky Brodix at the time!

Thanks Mike. I ran a pair of fully ported Brownfields on my Penske IROC Camaro that I sourced via Billy Mitchell in NYC. They ran like a train and gained around 75hp over the much vaunted 'Turbo' 292 iron heads. Glad they didn't disappear completely... :)

Bill Mitchell, we used to buy stuff off him when he operated from the back of his house on Long Island, one of the most miserable people I have ever met. Came across him at last years PRI and I think he's got worse !
He did once lend me his neigbours station wagon to take some stuff to the airport, though, but whether his neighbour new I was never sure.

That's him! At the time though, he was a useful and quite efficient source of stuff you couldn't get here. I must have spent thousands with him.

Sorry for thread drift, but if AFR are the original Brownfield company, I know what alloy heads I'd be getting... :)

I have a 347 in my Cobra. I bought a pair of Brodix heads from Keith Craft. I gained 80 rear wheel hp. Best $1700 I've spend on my motor.
