Ft. Worth checking in!

Good Morning Folks,

I'm considering my next project and think a GT40 may be the way I want to go. I've been browsing and doing some research and am zeroing in on an RCR Mk-1 kit. I'm wrapping up a current project I started from scratch and want something a little less "involved" than this one was. Many kits out there, and a Cobra or the like doesn't really appeal to me, but the GT40 does!

I'm in the DFW (more Ft. Worth side) area and looking forward to chatting with you all about these wonderful cars.

Cheers
Dave

Dave, welcome to the forum. I’m about 2 hrs west of you here in Texas and am building a mostly scratch built 40. Check out my build page here and you are welcome to come out and visit & see it in person too. I’ve heard RCR may have a bit of a wait from order to delivery so figure that into your plans/decision as well. Of all the different “kits” or project cars out there, the GT-40 is one of the more complex in terms of non-traditional space, systems and design that take more time & thought into making it all come together…even with a “kit”. From my lurking here for over 20yrs, I would estimate the “average” build time is about double of a Cobra replica.

This is a great group (despite some recent scammers) of like minded folks who are positively helping and encouraging those trying to pursue & enjoy one of their life goals of building/owning/driving their own GT-40(s).

Thanks, guys! I appreciate the warm welcome. I should clarify in no way did I mean that that building a GT-40 would be easy. I’m almost finished with my other project, a BMW 507, which I built from scratch after scanning a 1/18th scale model, building a full sized body buck, hammering the panels out and rolling them on an English wheel, etc, etc. I built every part/piece of this car and it would be nice on the next project to have a vast majority of things already figured out.

Here’s a pic of it when it was driving. I put about a hundred test miles on it then disassembled it for paint. I’m in the final stages now with the last minor items then upholstery. Been a long and rewarding road.

Looking forward to being a more interactive part of this group one day!

Cheers

Thanks, guys. Dr. Woods, I’ll plan on reaching out when the time comes for sure. Having never sat in one, it might be best to do that before pulling the trigger.

David, here’s a few photos of my 507 build. It was basically a two-year research project before I started fabrication. I’ve made a lot of contacts and it’s been an eye opening endeavor.

It’s as accurate as I could get to a real one and it’s all steel as that’s what I’m used to dealing with. I tried to get even small details correct as the whole is only as good as the sum of its products. Everything is functional: heat, radio, wipers/washer, recirc/fresh air cabin intake, door windows, convertible top. I planned on making a “real” car and not just a chicken wire and bondo assembly, so everything had to be functional. Having only made 254 chassis with 252 sold to the public, parts are a bit hard to come by and not cheap. A few parts are hand made reproductions of original parts while others are readily available counterparts that I spent time studying to find something similar that would match the original as much as possible like wheels, turn signals, door handles. It’s been a very fun project all done by me.

Hopefully a GT-40 will be next?

Cheers
Dave

Dave, welcome to the site, it appears you have significant skills.

Question, your user ID says A12pilot, please explain. I spent my career in aerospace mfg, I’m intrigued. Thx

Thanks, Michael. Well, I didn’t fly the Oxcart but I do fly something as equally exciting….a 737! Ha!

The name stems from my 1969-1/2 A12 Super Bee I restored years ago and also being a pilot. I just keep the handle name on all forums if I can.

Cheers

SWA/AA/DAL/UAL/other?

Here in North TX, DFW A320 for AA. Several Ford sports racers in the stable.

Crazy fab skills on the 507. Nice.
