It looks to be a FiberFab Avenger GT-12 – made by the US-based kit car company until nearly 1980. Their original Avenger models were more GT inspired, but the GT-12 was much closer look to the real thing. Made from 1966 to 1978, the GT-12 (and GT-15) kits were considered enormously popular.

That's the moniker I was trying to recall but couldn't!
Bring a Trailer sold one not long ago.
Here are some images I took yesterday of it's current condition. My ex partner was attempting to "ratrod" it, I guess. Started sanding the body is as far as he got. The rest is how it was when I acquired it a few months ago. I'm told it's a Ferrari engine, but I'm not sure. I'm unsure if it ever ran or was always a project car. What is a reasonable value in it's current condition? I have a couple people interested in trade, and I'm not sure if it's better to trade or finish the project.

I added some pictures if you wouldn't mind checking them out. I downloaded the manuals for the gt 12 and gt 15.
That is not a Ferrari engine it is a Chevy, do some investing on Chevy part numbers maybe you have some good engine parts. Casting numbers on engine block , heads , intake manifold. Bolt the Holley carburetor back on and block of the openings on the engine with a rag or heavy tape.
I'm not aware of any 'vintage' Chevy V6 or V8 that had a front mounted distributor. I know that "Summers Bros" used to make a kit that relocated the distributor to the front and drove it off the engine's timing chain assembly...but the engine above doesn't appear to have one of those.
Neither can I recall any Chevy V6 with exhaust manifolds that look anything like the ones above...buuuuut I'm old and my 'recollector' doesn't always 'recollect' too awfully so pretty good.
What 'make' that engine is a mystery to me. If it's a 'domestic (and the rocker covers and a couple other items sure suggest that's the case), the blue paint 'hints' it may be a Ford or Pontiac (shade thereof not withstanding)...but, then again, I don't recall a front distributor on any Pontiac engine either...neither do I recall a vintage Pontiac or Ford V6.

They must have modifiet that transmission if its VW otherwise it has four backward gears..

The VW Beetle transaxle is capable of having its ring gear "flipped" over to the other side of the pinion gear to reverse its direction. Otherwise, it can be turned upside down, as I did with my G50.
Thanks everyone. I'm stumped too, perhaps they did say Fiero engine and I mistakenly said Ferrari. I'm not knowledgeable about the differences in those. I have a few interested in bartering for it, so I guess my question now would be what would a fair value be in it's current condition vs time, effort, and future value to try and salvage it?
I saw the HEI distributor, so Chevy Buick Pontiac Oldsmobile whatever but not Ferrari.

It’s a Buick 231 / 3.8L engine. Same as Buick put in their midsize cars like the Turbo Regal in the mid-late 80’s. The first pic here is from Jenny’s car, the second is a random web shot. The other clincher will be from the oil pump and filter being on the other side of the engine’s front cover as the fuel pump (clearly shown)
