Manx Classic 2012

The Manx Classic takes place in April and at present 4 GT40's will be in attendance all from the North West as all the Southern puffters don't like to come up North!!!! A new trophy will be awarded for the Ramsey Llhergy Frissel Hillclimb and will be as a replacement to the Baines Trophy which has disappeared of the face of the Earth. The new trophy supplied by Mick Sollis will be called The Southern GT Trophy. It will be engraved to show the winners over the last two years to show the drivers who never got to see the Baines Trophy. If we get one more car to enter then a separate class will be run just for the GT40s by the organisers.

Hi Chris. Be great to see you in the IOM spectating or otherwise. No more track days for me except the Le-Mans track time which I may still do. How about you? May do Harewood.

prob aiming to do 4 or 5 days if poss. GT40 club day at Blyton in June should be good and the supercar club might be doing something similar.
car is in a few bits at the mo looking for the source of a persistent gearbox oil weep all last season, looks like back end of the box might have to come off to fix it.
you hanging onto your car and doing the paint this yr martin?

Excellent news indeed, I look forward to hearing all of your island exploits.

Please make sure none involve blue flashing lights or Police escorts...:lipsrsealed:

Have fun and great to see that SGT have put up a new trophy - shame on those that decided the outcome of the COH Baines one!!

Wish I could be there but alas I will not be....

Hi Paul as you are aware the Baines Trophy was chased around long enough and it still never turned up so it was only right to bin it. Shame as it was a great trophy with a history. Where did it end up, does anyone actually know?

No mystery, as far as I know it is currently with former GTD40 owner Andrew Fordyce (whom I gave it to last year) to be returned to Robin Batt of COH Baines. I initially forwarded it to Frank Catt initially back in 2009 for the IOM Manx trip then but as Martin Weigold was then unable to attend, Frank chose to return it to me after discussing the matter with Robin. I spent some time in discussion with Robin initially when all this flared up, trying to make it available to ' ALL GT40s' and not just GTD40s but to no avail.

I considered that it should have been given for the then and subsequent winner of the Lherghy Frissel climb but this was not accepted. A great shame and in my opinion a stupid, coerced decision. In my times of competing for the trophy, the requirements to win it seemed to change year by year, with me missing it each time... I eventually managed it thanks to Martin Weigold allowing me to co-drive his GTD40 in 2008 when I took it out to IOM for him. Bit of a hollow victory now with all the hoo-har that followed and in hind-sight its the only trophy I am no longer proud to have my name engraved upon.

Anyway - there you have it. A HUGE THUMBS-UP from me to Mick for putting up a new trophy - LONG LIVE THE GT40, regardless of Mfr and the historic results for the missing two years is a great idea too - well done chaps!

End of.

Just for the record the new trophy was kindly given to me by Mick Sollis after the 2009 Classic when it became evident the Baines Trophy was no more. After further attempts to sort out the Baines Trophy and in light of recent developments I have decided that it will take the place of the Baines Trophy. It will be open to be won by ANY GT40, be it real or replica, which sets the fastest time on the Llhergy Frissel Hillclimb. Two names are in my opinion are missing from the Baines Trophy that of mine and Steve Barker. These names will be put on the new Southern GT Trophy dated 2009 and 2010. Thanks for you input Paul, now get you back side over to the Isle of Man whenever you can and TRY and win it.
Regards Martin

Have fun and post pics..

Paul if I go next year to make it a level playing field I guess you should have a go in my car and see how you get on. Now that would be a competition.

Hoping you have a great time on IoM. Like the idea of how you have dealt with the trophy, very sensible approach.
