New member KVA MK1 upgrades

Hi All,

Instead of buying a Porsche 996 C4s I ended up buying a gt40 KVA MK1 with a Penske racing suspension. I want to upgrade some key mechanicals such as engine and gearbox and would like to share this journey as I am learning as I go along. I have attached some pictures of the car. It currently has a river v8 and a 4 speed Renault box ( I plan to replace these with a RICARDO and ford 302 ). Let me know your thoughts on the challenges ahead. Thank you

Hi Hugo, plenty of support on the forum, yours has 4 wheels and an engine/ gearbox so you are way ahead of me :)
Where are you based? Chris Cole in the UK is the gearbox man, 302's are about of course, you probably don't have to worry about IVA (If in the UK) so that helps a lot with block choice
Good call, lots of 996's but how many GT40's?? It why I chose 40 over Cobra, went to the UK Stoneleigh show and saw probably 100 Cob's (Still a great car and a GD will be my next build maybe?) and about 6 40's!!
Heart and head, go with that heart
Cheers

Thanks for the support. I am based in the Midlands UK. Trying to find out if a Ricardo gearbox from a ford GT requires an adaptor plate or if it will be a straight fit to a 302. Mine was built in the early 90s so its got an interesting mixture of parts but its only done 12k miles. I plan to start working on it in the new year.
Agreed with the cobra .... have a friend 5 miles away who is building one. Have you given some thought to the engine and gearbox for your build.

Welcome Hugo. As you are in the Midlands you are not too far from us in the NW. The NW group of the GT40 Enthusiasts Club meet up on the first Wednesday of the month at the Bells of Peover from 7.30pm. If you can make it there is a meeting this Wednesday and you will be most welcome. We have lots of members with a range of cars both on the road and in build. The NW organiser Pete Thompson lives just north of you in Eccleshall.

From looking at your pics it is difficult to see exactly what KVA elements you have. Some pics of the front and rear suspension and chassis would be very helpful. Is the car road registered and in possession of a V5? This will determine what you do in terms of upgrades. The Ricardo box is huge, heavy and will stick out of the back of the car. It is overkill and there are better options available and at less cost with readily available adaptors and gear linkages. Your car has a centre gear change so I am guessing it uses cables.
It will be easier to help with the most relevant info if you say what you intend to use the car for. I have sent you a message via this forum (see Inbox at the top of the page).
Cheers
Mike
