NHS to sell patient records?!

In just two weeks, the personal medical records of everyone in England will start being sent to a central database - Care.data - to be used by the NHS to improve its services.

But there’s a catch: private companies will be able to buy access to our data too - private companies like Serco or big pharmaceutical companies.

So here comes more targeted junk mail and bothersome phone calls trying to sell me Viagra and knee replacement services!

I just may not want the entire world to know that I have swamp fever of the Anus, thank you very much!

Well, we do now !!!!

Better hurry up and get that Ferrari finished then before you have to be put down by the vet !! Put grab handles on the roll cage to help not straining your knees, vinyl on the seats for your swamp fever and .......... well I don,t know what to say about the Viagra situation ..
just get a grip on it all !!!!!!!!!

Mark is talking about the Summary Care Record which kicks in in March. This is a good thing because it shares critical medical information with the primary health carers so that no time is lost, or confusion arise in treatment. For example, a trip to A&E will be facilitated by them having access to details of any medication you may be prescribed - this will save vital time in treatment. An NHS explanation leaflet is attached.

The default position is opt-in but you can choose to opt out. I have attached a form to do this.

There is a secondary use of the Summary Care Record and that is the commercial aspect that Mark is talking about. Your doctor has no choice in this matter and as far as I am aware, they are dead set against it. No clinical details will be available for disclosure however, only a limited amount of info but enough to identify you and perhaps a pointer towards lifestyle etc.

Your surgery will have forms available if they are on the ball, and you can opt out of the secondary use of the Summary Care Record. It is vitally important to quote the two documents mentioned in the letter.

I further enclose the opt-out letter for secondary use of the Summary Care Record.

To reprise, I agree with the Summary Care Record, but not with the secondary use.

For all the reasons Keith mentioned, re actual care, fair enough. But which civil servant twat is going to be entrusted with the sake of this data to corporate entities?

@Graham. It's too late for me. Save yourselves! ;)

I have not heard about records "for sale" Mark. Can you point me to any written piece on this?

But I agree it is feasible, after all, this kind of stuff has value. Your personal records are being bought and sold by just about everyone these days, but under the Data Protection Act, you can demand to see what information any company hold on you and this includes video camera files from CCTV and have those records deleted.

Every night-club and venue I controlled had extensive CCTV which was a requirement for our various permits and licences. Not a week went by that I didn't get an approach from a media company to sell any tapes where violent incidents had taken place something I steadfastly refused to do and made it a dismissible offence for any staff to do so. The danger was, that office staff could sell these tapes without my knowledge, so when we went digital and I was able to encrypt everything, the pressure was off.

You are now probably watching "stolen" tapes like these as "mass entertainment" on slush TV channels.

If they tried to sell your records, they would end up with a hernia trying to lift them. Which would then be on your records!!!!!

Trying to dig out relevent stuff Keith.

NHS admits new medical records database could pose privacy risk - Telegraph

Naturally, those who control us want to keep the 'data for sale' side of this hush-hush, but it's in there if you care to find it.

I'll see what else I can dig out.in the meantime, let's hope they get someone who actually knows how to hold and manage data like this safely. Heaven forbid the tax payer should waste another countless billions like we did at the BBC or HMRC, with their swanky new computer software systems!

Thanks for the info Mark.

"Failure to hand in an opt out form by this date entitles the NHS to sell off student patient records with no need for formal consent. It is also worth noting that it is impossible for patients to choose to opt out from this scheme after March."

I have included an opt out form(s) (2) in my post above. One from both the whole Summary Care Record and the Secondary Use of the Primary Care Record. Your choice.

Like it says, you will not be able to opt out after March, so do it today if you want to (or tomorrow after it gets light)

That is all.

Regardless of the intent, there will be someone sueing someone over this...
Where's Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson on this? Certainly someone will fear/claim that their "accidental misuse" of prescription pain killers may be used against them.. And of course this absolutely and unfairly targets people of color...

@ Mark

Maybe the V pill could come in handy as I read somewhere that, allegedly, Ferrari drivers are supposed to "go in deeper and come out harder"!

Thanks Glenn :) but those days are long gone for this poster boy! A mug of Horlicks and a good book (not one on climate change), are all I need these days ;)

May I recommend "The Unfair Advantage" by Mark Donohue?

Brilliant!

One of my favourites Keith! That book is what gave me confidence to tackle building my P4. Mark Donahue is an inspiration.

there's an fantastic part where he tells of the Penske cars being stolen from a parking lot and also very good reading about the GT40 MKII brakes exploding at Daytona in 67. If you want to know the proper way to bed in brake pads, this book will inform you!

Also how they cut away the bodywork in the Camaro's (?) to save weight, which inspired the title for the book.

My favourite quote, "If it looked wrong to me, it probably was", but he admits that he often didn't know why!

And the part where they had men in white coats clinging to the roll bar with equipment measuring slip angles whilst hurtling around GM's skid pan! EPIC!!

Boy was I born a decade too late???!!!
