This 01E a "good" one to get?

Looking at an Audi manual tranny model 01E300048N.

Comes out of a 2002 3.0 A4

Looks like the gearing is right from what I can find but not sure how strong it is.

Does anyone know how much this thing SHOULD be able to take?
 
The 01E is rated I've been led to believe for 450Nm of torque.

You need the 2wd version, the awd while you can weld up the centre diff is always going to be weaker.
 
Pretty certain it's a 2WD version but no way will a transaxle rated at a mere 450Nm of torque (or 332 ft/lbs if I did the math right) hold up in the application I plan then.

I thought these things were good for 600+ horsepower engines?

Can they be beefed up relatively inexpensively or should I just look for something else costing a LOT more money?

IIRC a LSD unit will help a bit in the "strength" department when it comes to the Audi box, and there WAS a Dog-Box option for the 01E.

But short of the dog-toothed gears (which I probably couldn't stand for very long in a road car), I hear good things about the G50 and there seems to be plenty of aftermarket support for it. I'm betting that for a "bit" more money than the 01E you'll get better results with the G50... (it seems to be the preferred option when it comes to transaxle choices)

But I based on what I've read around here, neither of the three most popular Audi boxes (012, 016, or 01E) will hold up very well when subjected to 600+hp.
 
Quick edit: With the excel spreadsheet I have for the 01E gear ratios, I believe the 6th gear in that (0.68) gives you just under 200mph with a 24.9" diameter tire @ 7500rpm...

Disclaimer: If a 24.9" diameter tire seems a bit small, thats because I stole the excel spreadsheet from a VW forum.
 
After doing some more digging, I think that although it may be factory rated at 450NM it can be made to handle much more and still cost much less than a G50.

Looks like this Steve guy they mention reworks the internals. I will probably just go with one of his with an LSD option then instead of buying a used one that probably won't handle the power.
 
The 01E can survive that but only after it has been worked over but not abused. I have not heard of a coverted4wd box surviving having the diff welded, so I would steer clear of that.

I know of a good 6speed box, but I am thinking it might just make more sense to get one that Scott (or Jerry) has already reworked.
 
A manual transaxle designed for a 3.0 liter engine is not going to handle 600hp, plain and simple, even with modifications.

If you look at a manual transaxle designed to handle high horsepower/torque applications it's sized much differently than one of lesser forces. The gears themselves are much wider and thicker in all respects (one reason why high hp/tq boxes are larger....) and the bearings are much larger, just for example. That's not something you can change/rework. Yes, you can put in an LSD and alleviate the spider gears imploding (a common weak point) but the whole rest of the transaxle is designed to handle a very modest amount of hp/tq.

If you have a 600 hp/tq motor an audi box isn't going to be satisfactory, even with extensive modifications. You need a G50 at a minimum, or even better, a ZF or Ricardo.

An audi box with a few basic mods will work for a 350hp/tq Ford crate motor (like my car), but that's about it.....
 
I'd agree with these comments relative to O16 5 Speeds but not O1E 6 Speeds, they are a vastly different animal and we just haven't had any dramas with them, even behind supercharged 5.4's with lots of torque.
Speak to Scott who's clients run them in some pretty modified vehicles.
 
The 01E has been known to survive 700+ with a few closer to 1000 with a few mods. But it will really come down to how you plan to drive it.

Abuse any of them and you should expect to replace parts often

This has not been my experience. The highest torque and most abused gearbox i have in the field handles about 750-800 ft/lbs in a racing environment on massaged stock internals with a clutch type LSD. This gearbox has been abused and drag raced repeatedly and the only issues have been is first gear is wearing and they are on their second ring and pinion (caught a slippery spot on the track.. Wheel spin then hooked up, chipped 3 teeth on the ring gear). So in a street setting the 01E can handle a respectable amount of torque. I've changed the first gears to make them more robust, and there is an 01E with a larger ring and pinion out there. The 01E probably has the best torque capacity per dollar of any production transmission out there. And if driven smartly will handle any engine it's attached to.

Just an FYI.....I spoke to Jerry Jansing a few weeks ago and while Jerry USE to be heavily involved with GT 40's that involvement has really wained over the years. I called him to get info on the box in my car and he told me he still gets calls all the time but really has little to no involvement with things related to the 40. He said he doesn't mind answering questions but I kinda got the impression he's writing another chapter of his life now and would prefer to deal with all that entails. Just so yous know. :)

Thanks Scott. No doubt you know more about the internal details than others , including me. Great to hear the 01E is holding up well under high hp/tq situations. Do you have any insights into why this particular box is more robust than other audi boxes? Gears are wider/thicker? Bigger bearings? More webbing on the case?? Thanks.

Central case is steel.

Front and rear support bearings are large tapered roller bearings.

There is a center support bearing between gear clusters 1-4 and 5-6 which
limits amount of shaft deflection under torque (shafts try to bend away from themselves)

Also rear of input shaft is bearing supported (016 5th gear just hangs on the end).

Output shaft is solid and substantially thick.

Gear widths are 26-30mm wide (most other Audi boxes are about 12-16mm wide).

Aluminum housings are thick walled and ribbed.
