I assume this one is recommended?
Any other books that you can recommend (I did a search, 200 posts.. .)

Good news. Expensive though in our money at about R1000, about four times more than the average motoring book.
However, no doubt worth every cent and a great future collector's item as is the original in any case.
At the Goodwood Revival Meeting in 2003 I asked the owner of bookstall if he had the book in stock. He burst out laughing. I got the message!
Regards,
Andre |

I ordered it 10 mins after you posted.... and it has just arrived....very cool.
I suspect my late nights on internet are now going to be supplemented with extended reading....
Looks great though - masses of pics and sections added with new current photos + Ford GT details/pics. |

Rep Power: 11 | Re: Ford that Beat Ferrari - new edition! I had a quick flick through it on one of the stalls at the Festival of Speed and it has quite a lot of new pictures that were not in the original one. I was tempted but at that price I thought again, (and the wife was with me). Maybe I'll save up for the leather bound edition out in September at £200 !!! It is a fantastic book and in the long term I think a good buy - apparently its about £50 on Amazon? |

Rep Power: 8 | Re: Ford that Beat Ferrari - new edition! I sprung for a first edition a couple of years ago, nearly had to take out a loan to do it. Great, great book though. I was pleased I did it a few months later when I had the great fortune to sit with Phil Remington at Monterey while he looked through it. He had never seen the book, or many of the pictures, before, and it was amazing to have him look at quite a few of them and say things like, "oh, I remember that pit stop. We were having trouble with the fuel pumps and Carroll Smith and I got some wire and..." It was like being in a time machine.
I'm amazed that there is a new volume of this book as I was told somewhere along the line that they had destroyed the plates from the original printing. I guess that doesn't prevent a whole new edition from being done. Can't wait to see it.
By the way, the Pete Lyons GT40 book that Carroll Smith was helping him on is available for pre-order once again on Amazon.com. Publication date is now listed as something like December. I've twice pre-ordered it and had my order canceled after many months of waiting, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Pete Lyons is a very fine writer and told me a couple of years ago that Carroll Smith had sent him page after page of fascinating notes on the GT40's development, which should make for a great book if it ever sees the light of day. |

I also heard that the original plates were accidentally destroyed. My guess is that when the publisher noticed that the originals are selling for $1,000, they decided that it's worth the trouble of reissuing the book.

[/ QUOTE ] Amazon.com says December 2006. I didn't know about the book, but I've now added it to my wish list. |

Rep Power: 8 | Re: Ford that Beat Ferrari - new edition! Ben, thanks for noting the correct year in Amazon's estimate. I've pre-ordered it so many times that I guess I don't even really look at when they think it will be issued. Frankly I'll be surprised if they don't cancel my order again in a few months, if they don't think it will be printed for another year and a half. I'll just have to continue my habit of re-pre-ordering it every so often, just to let them know that people are interested in the book. |

I don't know a lot about printing, but having visited a couple of shops here for catalogs etc. we have done I would guess that plate printing isn't done any more. So, if the book was produced with plates it makes no difference now. Seems everything that I've seen at the local printer (which is pretty big and does limited runs of "special books") is all electronic drum/ink/electronic printing on paper that is then cut and bound. Maybe the "plates were destroyed" should be on www.urbanlegend.com or was used to drive original values up? |

Could be...it probably was one of the factors that caused me to bankrupt myself for my first edition... |

Rep Power: 8 | Re: Ford that Beat Ferrari - new edition! Well I am back on line thanks to Paul . My computers hard drive destroyed itself. On the way to meet Dave Champ at Goodwood FoS I was pleasantly mugged by Gordon Jones who came out of the Silverstone books caravan and said "Do you want me to sign it?" I did. Speaking as someone who contributed to the Original book. It has not got my photo in it. I still have the original and it is missing the model and book section. Still it is lighter than the original (managed to get Brian Redmans signature on both books). And lets hope the cover does not fade. I guess I will have to get to the Shelby convention to get John Allen signature!
