Acura Legend transaxle?

I recently noticed that the manual-transmission 1991-1996 Acura Legends used a longitudinal 6-speed. As this is similar in orientation to the Audi transaxles, I was wondering if anyone has considered using them in a mid-engine application? Acuras are known for their durability and the Legend actually made pretty decent power (at least compared to the Audis which used 016 transaxles) so perhaps this might be a suitable application with a V8?

Re: Acura Legend transaxle?

I worked as a mechanic at Acura for 8 years. Fist, the trannies were not that reliable, not bad, but not the best. Honda seems to be pretty weak with all of their transmissions. 2nd. There is no differential in the tranny, it is a separate unit that bolts up to the side of the engine oil pan (1 driveshaft actually goes through the oilpan) and there is a small shaft that runs from the trannny forward to the diff. It may be possible, but the other problem would be how far forward the axles are, you would have to move the engine back at least a little and then it may be too far out the back.
Last, the 6 speed is very rare, they only came in the type 2 coupes (in canada anyways). I only ever worked on 1 car.

Re: Acura Legend transaxle?

Agree with Eric, it wouldn't work without major modification. The Legend is a front wheel drive car, A PTO shaft goes foward from the trans to the diff, the axle centerline is just forward of the engine centerline.

Re: Acura Legend transaxle?

Would the transaxle from an NSX work in a GT40?

Re: Acura Legend transaxle?

The Subaru box is made of cheese, very bad for owners, very good for business, its not `if` it will break but `when`, and its always second or third gear that blows.
