Rep Power: 7 | Need emissions help I will be required to pass a TSI (two speed idle) emissions test ( idle speed but,not specified, then @ 2500rpm and back to idle not exceeding 220ppm HC and 1.2% CO. First preference for engine is a Carburated 427"FE" probably a Pond Al block w/ Edelbrock AL heads ( at this time I can spec displacement, cam specs ect). Second choice is a FI 427 "Windsor" engine from Roush. Here are the questions....Does anyone know if an FE can pass w/o catalytic converters ( again realise I can spec the cam, carb as I want; even would consider an emissions carb and then a second carb for "after emissions"....If the FE won't pass w/o cats will it pass w/ cats?..............IF carbed FE won't pass w/ cats does anyone have experince w/ a 427 fuel injected Windsor( will it pass w/o or if needed w cats???? I'm in the States and hope someone here or "over there"(where I'm told you Brits need to pass standards this tough or tougher) can help me.....Don't want to have engine built then end up w/ car as "Garage Art"......Unfortunately engine builders here "don't have a clue".....Thanks in advance.....Steve |

Rep Power: 15 | Re: Need emissions help Those standards are what 1981 & newer cars must meet in Utah (and I expect it's the same in every other state). By 1981, all cars had catalytic converters, did they not??? Could be rough. You could use something like a Gunson Gastester to check the CO, but iirc, you would normally want to set it to about 3% CO which ain't gonna pass... |

Rep Power: 7 | Re: Need emissions help Steve,
How soon do you plan on registering this car? The SEMA legislation that has been passed in several other states is going through the MA legislature now. At best it will probably be late in the year before it passes. This legislation will give us with replicas of vintage cars relief from the emissions problems.

Rep Power: 7 | Re: Need emissions help Steve T Thanks for the article......Charlie I know about the SEMA effort but, although it has been through a public hearing at the DOT it isn't due out till 3-31 ( and the Dept head can and is likely to alter the wording) and then on to Ways and Means (who knows how long there) B4 it is passed to the legislature for vote and even then there is no guarantee that it will be put on the table so....I'm being advised that it may not be voted on in 06 ???Have you better info??? With the uncertanity of the bill hanging over me and need to decide on engine type and build latest in April to meet a June install date I'm hoping someone has real world experience w/ #'s like I have to meet or worse.......Hoping the Britts chime in here as I understand they need to meet tough emissions reqts......I could fab 2 sets of exhaust pipes...one set w/cats and one w/o...use the cats for test and then swap out??...would need to watch underhood temps near cats to prevent paint blistering of engine cover??? Anyone have experience?? Steve |

Rep Power: 7 | Re: Need emissions help Steve,
Roaring Forties has installed cats on at least one of their cars. I have a picture somewhere, I'll try to find it.
If I have to I'll go the two exhaust system route myself. I'd be glad to collaborate on this with you but I won't take delivery of my car until at least May and I probably won't be to that point in the build until late in the year. I have a couple of thoughts on how to do it but without a car in front of me it's difficult to tell if it will work.
