Rep Power: 1 | Some old GT40 ads Hey guys, I'm new around here. I've decided to kick off my contributions to this forum with some old ads for original GT-40s in various publications from the past. If anybody knows of more selling prices of GT-40s pre-1989, please share!
More to come!

I didn't mean for the first one to come out so small. It's #1055 with 5000 orig. mi. It was listed in Hemmings Motor News Nov. 1974 and the price was $20,000 firm. |

15K was indeed alot of $ in 71. I've heard that an original Ferrari 250GTO sold for $5800 that year. Funny that the GT40 at $1.5M today is not much over 1/20th the going rate of a Ferrari GTO. |

Rep Power: 6 | Re: Some old GT40 ads I called up the guy selling the ex-Hawkins AM GT40 and said I'd take it for $80,000 - he said the car was no longer for sale unfortunately. Bummer, that was a good deal. |

Rep Power: 4 | Re: Some old GT40 ads I had the pleasure of meeting the person that owned the Wilmett Coupe and several original GT40s which Mike Trusty (fellow SPF MK II owner) restored or worked on and asked him if he had regretted selling them and of course you know the answer. Its funny how many of the original cars ended up in Arkansas including #1075. One of the people who helped in the service of them is the person who set my cars suspension, he told me had the Alan Man lightweight in his garage for 8 years and drove it when ever he wanted because the owner didn't have room for it. Lucky bugger.

Bummer, that was a good deal. | I dunno..... 80k for a car is alot today, and 80k for a car in 1978 was jaw-droppingly, astronomically expensive. I think all of the ads reflected the market, if not above the market. I have an article from 1979 somewhere that states someone purchased a solid unrestored road model for $48,000 in October 1978 . A Ferrari 250 GTO was bought that same month and year for $96,000, but a MK IV was probably already above 100k! The race model GT40s did tend to be in the $75k range at the time though.
I do think the one offered for $90,000 in HMN 5/84 was definitely a bargain for the time. |

Rep Power: 6 | Re: Some old GT40 ads Greg, yes, you're right, $80K is a lot for a car today and that was a princely sum in 1978. However, if one were to do the math to figure out the rate of return of a $80K investment in 1978 yielding perhaps $2.0MM today (rough value of an original GT40 with race history) it would undoubtedly be a very healthy return. Hindsight is 20/20.... |

Remember, if anybody else has any old ads, don't bogart them! Post/scan them or at least quote them!
