I think these started off in the days before remote/radio control, so it was tether them or just shoot them off down the street I guess.
Saw some last weekend at the Beaulieu autojumble from the '30s

I have a friend that collects these. They date back to the 1920's through today. Some have very interesting body designs ranging from hot rod to streamliner. The sound when they run is crazy!
