Spinning wheels

Hey guys that was just a joke! :) Since I am from Missouri I could have asked if anyone knows of a gun rack made for the rear window of a GT :)

I was about to say...

PLEASE DON'T DO THAT CRAP TO A GT40!!! IF YOU DO, YOUR OWNERSHIP RIGHTS WILL BE REVOKED AND YOUR GT40 WILL BE GIVEN TO SOMEONE WHO DESERVES IT AND WILL RESPECT IT, NOT GHETTOFY IT.

That is all. LOL

Hell, I live in Texas, I need a gun rack for one too!! Well, I need a GT40 first...

Wait till I post the pictures of my 40 with the vinyl roof and the DVD system built into the instrument panel. Not to mention the undercar neon (had to raise a couple inches to make that work)

OK - it is not a GT40 but how about a Pantera with Vinyl top and outside exhaust - from the front fenders no less.
Picture from the book "cars of the stars" by George Barris. Location is outside of Barris' shop on Riverside Blvd. in North Hollywood about 1973

I bought a 1988 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe years ago. I saw it and the only thing that really mattered to me was the year and the fact it was a manual transmission. So I saw this thing that was owned by one of our "south of the boarder" friends, and it was totally decked out.

I swear to you it had curb feelers, mud flaps, 14" American Racing 3 spoke wheels, a wing added to the trunk lid, glitter paint like a Bass Boat, reflective pin striping, a clear red glitter filled shift knob, and a crushed velvet dash cover. Oh and the Virgin Mary air freshner, can't forget that. I removed all that crap that I could within about 5 minutes of buying the car!! LOL

I got that thing for $2,000. He had this enormous 1,500 CCA battery in there and it crushed the radiator overflow tube and eventually cut it and leaked coolant everywhere. That lead to a blown head gasket. I replaced the head gasket and swapped the turbo from the little bitty IHI over to a Super 60 series T3 that we pulled from an SVO parts car when I worked at Motion Dynamics. I ran that thing at 21 lbs of boost EVERYWHERE!!! LOL

Fun car...

Ahhh - the veritable 'Pinto' I presume??

2.0L 8v and 20psi gave a bundle of fun I suspect.

What sort of crank power did you get? - guessing at 220/250HP?

Like this?

Brian, you can't fool us ! We have it on very good authority that you drove the T bird (exactly as it was when you bought it) right through El Paso, across the bridge into Juarez:sombrero:,trying to impress the senoritas ! BTW, if you saved the Virgin Mary air freshener, you might be able to sell it on e-bay.

I think they used to run a prototype bodied "Mustang" in the '80's, possibly IMSA or similar, powered by a turbocharged Pinto motor that achieved 800 reliable HP with a relatively stock bottom end...

One of the great motors of all time..

Yep, one found its way out here to NZ & proceeded to decimate all the V8's in our Tranzam Series, I think it was a Riley & Scott chassis from memory & IIRC the motor might have been based on the larger 2.3 Pinto blocks with an Esslinger head. Been a while!

OH guys...

The Pinto and SVO and Turbo Coupe and Merkur XR4ti all had the 2.3 OHC engine. They all had the Garrett T3 turbocharger, except for the 87-88 Turbo Coupes. They had this little bitty IHI turbo.

The engine that the IMSA car used was actually a Cosworth DOHC engine and had a crazy mechanical fuel injection and intake setup and some exotic Indy Car turbocharger on it. It only made 600 hp @ 9,000 RPM. It was under 2.0L displacement though.

Wow Brian, didn't know you knew all that stuff...

Neither did I... LOL

History of that imsa-mustang was (quickly from my memory, sorry for possible errors) :

1978 German raceteam Zakspeed (Eric Zakowski) built new car for Group 5, so called silhouette formulas; Ford Capri (mk3 type). It was first Kent 1,3 iron block based (rules), bored to ~1,4 and head was familiar 16v BD-series Cosworth, and with KKK -turbocharger + Kugelfisher mech. injection. Around 380-450 hp. Dr. Schrick was main engine developer.

Regs said that doors must be interchanceable with originals, as boot and bonnet, and roof + parts over "cabin" must be original. Frame was made of aluminium tube, and doors etc. from then new material, Kevlar.
For -79 they made few ~1,7 l versions fight to against big engined Porsches (like 934, 935). Same thing -80. 500-580 hp
1981 rules wasn`t so "tights" anymore so they used aluminium Hart -based BDC / BDG -block and got out around 600 hp.
Zakspeed then started their F1 -project, no time anymore for tin-tops, and "sold the idea of car" to US, to Roush who run them in IMSA (Zakspeed / Roush).

Someone knows more about that US -history?

I think it`s unfair to say that IMSA-Mustang was Zakspeed Capri with new clothes (europe press said..), there was big diffirencies like transmission etc.

Shortly: Engine is Zakspeed (Schrick) developed turbocharged version of good old Escort mk1/2 and RS200 "BDA" engine.
As You see in first "cutaway drawing", intake is right side of the car.

But last pic, that isn`t BD-series engine. Looks like more that American -based 16v engine which was for sale still in 90`s Ford Motorsport US catalogues. Looks like "Lima" 2,3 -engine with 16v head (Cosworth? Or US product?) and turbo.

Hmm, I can find quite a few references to motors used in the Imsa Mustang and I do believe it did have a Turbo Cosworth BDA in it's early form through Ford's association with Cosworth. Zakspeed were indeed running a version in their Capri's in Europe, although to me, this doesn't make sense as the BDA was at least 1800cc whereas the BDT was 1700+ cc - the kind of displacement that the original Mustang GTP had and was specifically designed as a turbo motor.

Later horsepower figures indicate "700hp +" and this seems to coincide with the departure of Roush from the partnership (who wanted homegrown V8's) and the fact that Zakspeed wasn't particularly keen on working with Cosworth plus Ford wanting to maintain a "high-tech" image by using small displacement 4 bangers would seem to indicate a shift in engine philosphy by using a different base motor. I am quite sure I was at at least 1 GTP race possibly in 1985, and the motor was definitely Pinto based with an iron block. I couldn't swear to the head as it was concealed by the induction system. I think Jac has nailed it and it was the 2.3 "Merkur" based motor that it ended up with. It made insane HP but proved "too hot to handle" as a result....
