Newt’s Faulty Food-Stamp Claim

Posted on January 18, 2012 , Updated on February 5, 2012
Newt Gingrich claims that “more people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than any president in American history.” He’s wrong. More were added under Bush than under Obama, according to the most recent figures.

A Mythical Florida Mom (And Other False Claims About Immigrants)

Wrong: Illegal immigrants don’t qualify for welfare or food stamps. A chain e-mail from a "disabled Vietnam vet" is full of misinformation.

After getting burned about 100 times, you'd think Bob wouldn't continue to post right wing blogosphere mumbo jumbo without checking it. He's like the guy who keeps touching the electric fence. OUCH. OUCH. OUCH. OUCH. OUCH. OUCH.

"Officials with the U.S. Department of Agriculture have been quietly assuring illegal immigrants that taking food stamps and other government assistance won’t slow their paths toward citizenship.
The agency’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program addresses the point: The brochure asks, “If I get on SNAP benefits, will I be a ‘public charge?’”

The brochure then answers: “No. You and your family can apply for and receive SNAP benefits without hurting your chance of becoming U.S. citizens.”
The Daily Caller reported on the brochure, which was part of a packet the USDA gives Mexican consulates for distribution among various Mexican communities in the United States.
The Census Bureau reports that heads of households born in Mexico are more likely than any other nationality to take some form of government food assistance."

p.s. Snopes is not a legitimate source of information.

Illegals getting free stuff while we cut back on things like FDA meat inspectors is our reality.

Cyprus seizing private citizens' savings, no I'm not talking about your normal taxation, is real.

England on the verge of censoring their newspapers is real.

The infinite denial of liberals and their "blame others for what you do" is very real, and they are getting stronger every day.

Won't even get into the 2nd Amendment assault here.

Illegal immigrants are not eligible for welfare or food stamps, period!

If you repeat a lie often enough, some gullible people will believe anything. It appers that we have a very, very gullible one!

Its lies like these that cost conservatives the last election, it appears that some will not learn from the past.

Newt’s Faulty Food-Stamp Claim

Newt Gingrich claims that “more people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than any president in American history.” He’s wrong. More were added under Bush than under Obama, according to the most recent figures.

Jim, at its face the "Fact Check" article is misleading and they are not "most recent figures". It takes a snapshot comparing eight years of Mr. Bush against a single term of Mr. Obama. While Mr. Gingrich’s claim may be disputed based in published information at the time, it was factually accurate.
But I guess it depends on when you ask. By July of last year, the increase in food stamp program participation in the 42 months since Mr. Obama took office did exceeded the increase seen during Mr. Bush's entire eight years.

Surprisingly, the last monthly report issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (of "the most transparent administration in history") before Election Day didn't reflect this data, hence the dispute with Mr. Gingrich's assertion.

The USDA made a surprising substantial upward revision to reported July participation on December 7 in its second -- not its first -- post-election report.
It is not at all unreasonable to believe that the original understatement was designed to ensure that this data was inaccessible to the campaign staff of Mr. Romney. The revision delay until the second post-election report quite possibly was designed to minimize the deception's visibility and the establishment media apparently didn't care to report it.

The last pre-election report released on September 28 showed an enrollment increase of just under 14.7 million during Obama's first 42 months. As large as that increase was, it was still 67,000 below the Bush administration's eight-year increase of 14.765 million.

But in order to return to topic:

This is what's bringing us to ruination...

Let us destroy the concept of "earning through achievement". Does our entire culture simply want mediocrity? We need some leaders with courage to stand up to entitlement minded parents who want everyone to "feel good".
Too bad a dedicated band director who has given much to his students has to go through this. Imagine how the kid with the "Super Overide" will improve the motivation of those that legitimately achieved the honor or how this will prepare them for the worplace (of course unless they go to work for the government or a union)

Pat,

I'm sure that neither you or anyone else is surprised that during the deepest recession in our lifetime, that the number of folks needing help might go up.

Pat, do you believe what Mr Fechter posted?

Do you think that the Governments is confiscating private citizens savings, laying off meat inspectors while preserving food stamps for illegal aliens?

Can illegal aliens legally get food stamp?

Jim, remember I'm the guy that spent three tours as an Inspector General. I believe government spending is massively out of control. There is tremendous mismanagement and waste, some of which I've mentioned in earlier posts. I also believe the "Sequester Crisis" by Mr. Obama's administration is a sham perpetrated on the American public to continue the growth of big government and the administration’s mid -term political agendas. The fact that Mr. Obama is cutting soldier educational reimbursements (in violation of enlistment contracts) while leaving intact Dept. of Defense projects like the wind turbine in Alaska in an area with no wind, research to determine how golden shiner fish could show the nation how to overcome political polarization and promote democracy or the Navy study how babies interact with robots.

Does the government confiscate private savings?
They will confiscate a big chunk of mine on April 15th.

Do some illegal aliens get SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - "food stamp") assistance?
Of course they do but since the government doesn't track it, the taxpayer impact is unknown. The fact is "illegals" can benefit from the program legally. Illegal immigrants can apply for food stamp benefits on behalf of eligible members of their households. So all you need to do is have a child or move in with legal Uncle Louie and you're set. Battered spouses and children (otherwise illegal) are eligible as well. What's more household illegal immigrants do not have to expend their own resources to purchase food on behalf of others but they obviously benefit from that taxpayer-funded food assistance on the table. What's more, the illegal alien's income does not count against the family maximum income limits to the program.

Pat,

So you are saying that If they have a US citizen in the family they can legaly get Food Stamps.

But Pat, if they have a US citizen in the family then that is a US citizen getting Food Stamps, is it not?

I'll ask again, can illegal aliens legally get food stamp?

You might:

• If you can get arrested for hunting or fishing without a license, but not for being in the country illegally … you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

• If you have to get your parents’ permission to go on a field trip or take an aspirin in school, but not to get an abortion … you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

• If you have to show identification to board an airplane, cash a check, buy liquor, or check out a library book, but not to vote who runs the government … you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

• If the government wants to ban stable, law-abiding citizens from owning gun magazines with more than ten rounds, but gives 20 F-16 fighter jets to the crazy new leaders in Egypt … you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

• If, in the largest city, you can buy two 16-ounce sodas, but not a 24-ounce soda because 24-ounces of a sugary drink might make you fat … you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

• If an 80-year-old woman can be stripped searched by the TSA but a woman in a hijab is only subject to having her neck and head searched … you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

• If your government believes that the best way to eradicate trillions of dollars of debt is to spend trillions more … you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

• If a seven year old boy can be thrown out of school for saying his teacher is “cute,” but hosting a sexual exploration or diversity class in grade school is perfectly acceptable … you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

• If children are forcibly removed from parents who discipline them with spankings while children of addicts are left in filth and drug infested “homes”… you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

• If hard work and success are met with higher taxes and more government intrusion, while not working is rewarded with EBT cards, WIC checks, Medicaid, subsidized housing, and free cell phones … you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

• If the government’s plan for getting people back to work is to incentivize NOT working with 99 weeks of Unemployment checks and no requirement to prove they applied but can’t find work … you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

• If you pay your mortgage faithfully, denying yourself the newest big screen TV while your neighbor buys iPhones, TV’s and new cars, and the government forgives his debt when he defaults on his mortgage … you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

• If being stripped of the ability to defend yourself makes you more “safe” according to the government … you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

I received this from a friend today pretty well sums it up.
