What would you do if there were no american engines?

Hi all!

The title says it all.

I am being theoretical, but I am curious to know what (realistic) engine will you choose to put into the gt40 bay if there were no Ford or Chevy engines in the world?

Lets see....

Ummm...if I'm not mistaken, the Rover V8 is an American engine. It started life as the Buick 215. My Dad and I rebuilt one in a 1963-4(?) Buick special, and then dropped it into his Alpha. The same engine also showed up in the Triumph TR8.

Well, actually, only the Buick 215 is American,,,,,,the specs for the Rover are GM (as is/was the tooling) but the process they used for the block in England is better.

GM used to pour the alum in around the steel sleeves,,,,while the Rover has the sleeves pressed into place. The Rover set up assures that there is no "shifting" of the cylinder and therefore has better cyl wall square.

This is a great little motor. I have one on the bench right now with a pair of very rare 64 buick 300 alum heads. These were only available for one year in aluminum and they have larger ports, and valve seat capabilities.
I was going to use it in a Manta Montage kit that I now have for sale. (to help pay for the frieght of my new GT40 kit)

The MBZ alum V8 is quite a bit heavier,,,,but the 5.0 in my 92 500e made 326 hp in stock form and has wide torque curve.
With a few mods, this engine easily makes 400hp, and can idle almost as smoothly as the stock unit.

Of course none of this matters since my 40 will have a small block ford in it. (hopefully with 8-sinister looking stacks in the rear window!)

OK, how much can I dream here?

Is Cosworth American? Its ownership is in Ford, but I think everything else is British. While I'm dreaming... Ilmor would be nice - there's the Australian connection there.

But a little more down-to-earth the Honda NSX engine responds well to turbo-charging I believe - and you get a 6 speed transaxle with it too!.

.....late model Toyota (Lexus) 1UZFE...4.0L Quad cam v8 which has microfinished crank and 6 bolt mains...apparently a restricted 208kW...
Shove a couple of T28 Roller bearing turbos...nice power...nothing overly outrageous...

I would go to NZ or Australia and Buy a 2008 Falcon Ranchero (Ute) Boss 260 and make fit before considering anything else.

I'd be checking out the Yamaha V8 that was engineered for the Ford Taurus SHO..

thats cheating Andy, Porsche 928, Toyota/Lexus, Holden 305/308 ( Although Mark W will probably remember that motor started out as a pontiac experiment that never got to production). Leyland P76. There are plenty out there when you start looking.

no doubt, jag V8. imho, ford should shelf their mod motor, and adpt the jag. lighter, smaller, more power.

cheers,

I would agree with Gweitzel.
M5 400hp and you dont have to play.
Not like some of the other nuggets that have been suggested.

(know your thinking I wonder which one he is talking about)

Jim

I would do what all Poms do and put an Escort 2ltr Pinto motor in it.
Sorry Guys.:D
Hey Jim I have a question for you which is off topic but here it is.
I think a skilled man like you should make available an 8 Stack set-up that is affordable for the V8 Windsor???.
