Top jobs

Whilst being a Pilot seems Uber cool, is it really the No1 job out there? Really? Who entered the survey, road sweepers and burger flippers?

Not poking you David. Is it really THAT good? As in, better than EVERYTHING else? I can imagine a few down-sides, just like with anything.

For me, my dream job would be driving a road-train around Australia. No phone, no people.

Mark,
It led to a very priviledged life style, lots of opportunities, a nice house in a cool part of the country, 3 children all educated privately at the best schools, quite a few toys. The list goes on. Apparently, (in my time) approximately 75% + of the male population actually would have liked the job and only 1.5 % succeed to command level on the larger jets such as the B747.

No disrespect David and yes I agree, it is a very cool job. But coolness and greatness and of course, resulting benefit, can be measured in very different ways depending upon who you are.

Like many things I have opinions on (many of which, I perhaps should not have), I tend to imagine that past decades would have been better for almost all avenues of endeavour. I suspect that flying a coach for Easy Jet on a daily basis back and forth between Luton and Malaga, is neither much fun, nor very well paid.

Last I read, they were so over-subscribed for pilot candidates, it was down to around 50K
:(

Even so, £100K would not justify the No1 slot in careers these days. Perhaps 30 years ago?

The sad fact, is that my job wouldn't even feature within the top 1000

Don't worry about me though folks. I aint plainin

In the 90's in BA, the Senior First Officers on the 747.400s were earning in excess of the numbers mentioned above. Captains with training qualifications and judicious bidding could probably treble that. That was twenty years ago - but I don't know what the current rates are.
With the union BALPA helping things along, I wouldn't be suprised to hear its a lot less now.

OK, so what DOES everyone on here do? We know what some do (doctors, pilots, race car engineers), and some are retired, but what about the rest? I will start the ball rolling: Marine Biologist.
