Aussie ADR's and engine choice

Giday all. I have been collecting parts and ideas for some time. The question is with the Australian ADR's and engine choice. I have a 5.0l in a 1994 LTD which is my doner motor. Will this motor have to be upgraded or tossed in order to meet newer adr's, or is proof of lineage to the AU series all that is needed, or willI need a Mod motor. Thanks in advance Daz
 
Daz, I'll do the best I can in this post. If you need further clarification, just give me a call and I would be quite happy to help you further.

There are different emissions regulations in different states in Australia.

QLD, SA, WA, NT are ADR 37/01 emissions.

VIC are ADR 79/00 till end of 2008.

NSW is ADR 79/01.

Unfortunately that engine of yours does not meet any of the above emissions. In saying that some states allow you to do emissions testing on an engine that are not automatically considered emissions compliant. You can only do that in states that have emissions testing facilities.

ADR 37/01 would allow you to use Ford 5L from AU Falcon(1998 onwards). Or any US Ford 5L from 1990 onwards, well actually also from 1980's if you can prove emissions level. You could also use Ford Modular 4.6lt and other engines as long as they are just as recent. Oh and you can use any engine you like if you run it on gas as there are no emissions requirements for engines running on gas under ADR37/01.

ADR 79/00 is engines from 2003 onwards. There is what I would call a loop hole that still allows you to register Ford 5L under 79/00.

ADR 79/01 is engines from 2005 onwards. NSW also accept USA sourced engines from last 3 years as long as you get the VIN number from the donor vehicle.

Thanks Craig, that has sort of sorted what I am going to do, I have 3 projects on the go, a locost, an old race car (new tub up resto) and a cobra. I am in QLD and I would like to be thinking that I after completing the current projects I would have a go at a 40. I have been in and seen your cars and I liked what I saw, though I am still in that world of do I go mono or chassis, scratch build or kit. As I start getting closer I will be in contact, Thanks Dazza
 
Dazza, doubt you've seen an RCR, you might be confusing me with someone else. I have only just got the 1st RCR GT40 here. It's in Brisbane. The RCR's are totallly different to the other GT40's here in just about every regard, so when you see one, you will know it. When you are researching your options when it comes to a GT40 give me a bell and see if I can help in anyway

Sounds like you have plenty of projects on the go. You are a lucky man.

Glad I have been of help. Also if you are looking for a QLD engineer for the Cobra, I would highly recommend Ray Cross.
 
Sorry Craig, I am confusing you with another manufacturer in the GC area, I clicked on your web link and the realised I was looking at the wrong vehicle immediately, as you state. The ones I was looking at are nice, but the RCR is more along my line of thinking. As for luck, I think not, more like hard work, I am idea rich and time poor. When I am heading down to Brisvagas with time I will give a holler and if you can spare some time for a chat I would like to see the RCR, if available for a viewing. Cheers Darren
 
Dazza, no problem viewing the RCR-40 it's at my brother's place. Just let me know when you are down next. Would be great to catch up and shoot the breeze. I'm really interested in finding out about your other projects as well. You can also check out my brothers Cobra while you are there.

For what it's worth the decision of which motor was dictated for me by the RTA requirements and what was going to be the easiest to comply with the regs as well as what would look the cleanest without having the engine bay cluttered up with pipes, hoses, leads and wires going everywhere.

The 5.4 Boss motor with the standard Ford ECU complies and does not have to be emission tested and is also a clean and uncluttered looking motor.

The other big factor is that a GT40 with a Boss motor registered in NSW can be sold in any other state without any problems unlike the situation that exists when trying to bring an out of state 40 into NSW and trying to get it registered which is next to impossible.

Dimi, your cruel, you know we just drool everytime you post photos of your GT40. :)

QLD doesn't have the same emissions requirements as NSW and does not have any emissions testing facilties. So our engine choices are broader, yet also more restrictive in some ways.

As far as I can see in QLD Dazza has a choice of Ford 302w, Ford 351w, Ford 4.6lt modular, Ford 5.4lt Boss, Toyota Lexus and all the Holden & Chev L & LS series engines. Maybe even Ford big block if he can find a compliant one that would fit. And then also absolutely any engine standard or modified he likes if he runs it on gas.

Yes I agree the gas option is there but the problem with gas as I see it is trying to find somewhere to fit the tank for the gas.

Not an easy thing to fit into a 40.

Dimi, That is just pure autoporn. If I can get my build to half that standard, I will be vary happy. Your photos appear to an uneducated Queenslander to be in the lower Hawksbury area? Just a guess

we have complete kits including engine looms, ECUs with mods to run ADR compliant cals without body modules and anti theft, intake systems, exhausts, oil pans etc etc - everything you need to run 302, 4.6 or 5.4. Please let me know if we can help.

We are also VASS Vicroads registration compliance engineers so very familiar with what you need for compliance. We have several vehicles which have recently been complied in Queensland (in fact some in all states) and more going through now,

Having it look as flash as Dimi's remarkable beast is a certainly a very tall order - well done Dimi.

No problem Dimi, always very happy to help any GT40 people, sorry we couldn't assist more during your build but as you'll see from my last post we have resourced and now have our own solutions for each of the engine varients, in fact we have 2 5.4's done now, and 5 underway - the first registered back in March.

I really hope you are enjoying your car after all the hard work, and Dazza sorry to distract from your thread but I hope it shows there's lots of help from manufacturers out there thanks to GT40s.com, from Fran's post it seems there are at least 3 makes involved in this one car.

You are right Paul, and every one has pluses and minuses with how things are done, I know when I get started, be it chassis or mono, scratch build or kit, for what I see on this forum the manufactures get as big a kick from the finished product as the owners, regardless of who made which bit (obviously each manufacturer would prefer it to be their bit..), all i need to do is get the missus' Locost, my cobra and F5000 finished, then a 40 here we come.
