Nick, were you able to visit Mont St Michelle?
We were on the way back to the ferry, a beautiful building just found the inevitable these days, the money-making side of it difficult. I needed my mother with me although being 90 next month the climb up would have been interesting. Many many years ago when they tried to charge her for going into a church in Venice she just sternly told them she was a Catholic and going in to pray so there was no way she would pay for that, and just marched past much to their bemusement, having a direct line to the Pope may have helped her confidence as well

Surprising. My wife, Joline, and I visited Normandy & Brittany in 2016 and walked into Mont St Michelle. There was no fee at that time.
