Clenet For Sale - South Africa

Nothing to do with GT40s but could be of interest to forum members.

The Clenet for sale is a 1981 California Roadster, the only one in South Africa, and has an interesting history. It's one big motor car!

A local sculptor, Danie (pronounced Darny) de Jager, was commissioned to sculpt a huge elephant for Sol Kerzner's Lost City hotel, casino and entertainment complex in the Pilansberg about 80 miles north west of Johannesburg. The Lost City website must be the longest in the world! It's www.africatravelling.net/south_africa/sun_city_&_lost_city/sun_city_&_lost-city.

Some Las Vegas casino owners came to South Africa to stay at the Lost City and were so impressed with Danie's work that they asked him to do some sculptures for them.

The Clenet was parked in a glass box in the casino of the Las Vegas hotel and whilst working there Danie fell in love with the car and negotiated it as part payment for his work.

The Clenet, number 38 out of 250 built, was originally sold to a Mr Ross of Beverly Hills and still has his initials on the door. It was then sold to the hotel.

It is the actual car that starred in the TV series 'Dallas', in which it belonged to Mark Grayston who, if I remember correctly, was a boy friend of Pamela Ewing. It also appeared in 'Tropical Heat', as well as another movie.

Price for this piece of history on wheels is $85,000 FOB Cape Town.

Size counts!

When I was going to school in Santa Barbara, I worked for a company that shared a building (actually an aircraft hanger) with Clenet and company. Been a long time since I've seen one of those...
