does anyone know if the Mazda mirrors require a relay or can they be wired direct? I have the mirrors but am missing the switch. I assume any switch would work, right? Hershal?

I had mine wire in directly
I can't help you much because I had a fiend do it for me.
Hopefully all is well as I haven't tried them yet.
Very nice looking though with the wires running through the door jam boot and all along with the door lock wires.
Anyway no relay was used.

You should be able to make any power mirror switch work, for the most part. Stay away from a switch from anything new, as the electronics are getting stupid. (various body computers, multiplexing signals, bla bla bla) Not that i think a newer switch wont work, it is just alot easier to understand the wiring diagrams, and you are going to have to do some matching. If you need help with some diagrams, let me know.

BMW Mini mirrors installed on RFGT40. Now if I could only figure out the electrics!!

GADS!!!! those mirrors look great on a GT. I guess I might have to break down a get a set.
Chuck, that's a good job installing them. I wish I could help you with the electric but I run the other way when wiring is concerned.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Peter Ransom of GT40 Australia makes a very nice f/glass version of the Escort mirrors that Trevor has shown above - the only difference being slightly taller pedestals so that they sit at the right height & angle off the doors. He also has manual or electric options - I went with the elecrtic ones & they are dead-easy to wire.

Each mirror unit has 4 wires - 2 for the up/down motor & 2 for the left/right motor. I just used a double pole / 3 position switch (with centre-off & momentary connection for each side throw) for each axis motor & ran them off a small gel-cell 12V battery mounted in the driver's door. I only have the driver's side working at the moment, but intend to get both sides working off main battery power when I get the body/door wiring in.

Kind Regards,

Peter D.

Chuck,
Paul Thompson hasn't chipped in here yet, but I suggest yo speak to him reference getting your door mirrors working. He worked out the logic for Roy's car.

Chuck,

Mind showing a side and front view of the Mini mirrors?
They look great from the rear /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Hi Chuck / Brett + all

The BMW Mini mirrors have 5 connections - three for the direction motors (one wire common) and two for the heated mirror option (if fitted).

I used a Standard FORD Mirror control joystick which is a neat little item. The centre rotates left-center-right to select the required mirror (nearside or offside) and then moving it up down left and right controls the required direction of mirror. Now the tricky bit, this switch does not directly drive the BMW mirrors - or I could not see a way to make it work. In fact when you reverse engineer the contacts on the joystick - it doesnt seem to work in a logical manner at all - still, I guess it works easily with Ford Mirrors. So - the switch had to be opened and 'modified' for want of better word, cutting or linking the copper tracks within to get some sort of logic I could use.

Anyway - as mentioned the mirrors use three wires across two motors call them common, A and B. Applying a 12v supply across the common and either A or B will drive each motor one direction and reversing the polarity will drive it in the other. Strangely enough the nearside and offside mirrors worked differently to each other as purchased too, so check and test first.

In Roy's car I fitted the 'thumbstick' to the drivers door panel and added a press button for the demist. This button starts a timer circuit that applies power to the demist wires of each mirror for a preset period of about 2mins. In fact they demist almost instantly when powered - quite neat really.

The basics of a suitable control circuit are shown below. It comprises mainly three relays - 1, 2 and 3.

The first determines the polarity and hence direction of the mirror motor. the second and third determine exactly which motor gets the applied voltage and hence movement.

I cannot find the thumbstick cct at present but will be re-building the cct anyway to use solid state instead of relays. This in turn will probably use a PIC controller instead and hence could have a memory function for different driver seating positions. (how sad is that!?)

Anyway - here is the relay / motor configuration:

Peter Ransom from GT40 Australia also makes modern styled high mount mirrors. They work very well on wide bodied cars, giving excellent vision. Available in manual or electric. Will be fitting them to my GT40.

Photo of them here.

I tried the high mounted mirrors from DRB, as you see to the left, I'm not using them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
