GT40 Mk V 'Lightweight Roadster'
Chassis # GT40 P/1133

Ten years after GT40 production ceased, John Willment of J.W. Automotive still retained the rights to GT40 from Ford along with all the original plans, tools, body moulds and jigs, plus a large quantity of spares. An agreement was reached with Safir Engineering Ltd of Byfleet, Surrey, to build a limited run-on and fifth variant of the GT40, known as the MkV.

The MkV chassis was slightly updated by the original designer Len Bailey and utilised a fabricated steel monocoque rather than pressed steel panels. Each MkV was given a genuine JWA chassis number under license and were then mostly fitted with Ford 289 cu.in. or 302 cu.in. road/race engines built by Mathwall, mated to a ZF transaxle. New body panels were also constructed using original moulds and the MkV became outwardly indistinguishable from earlier cars. (See p.319 GT40 by Ronnie Spain).

Arguably the most significant of all MkVs is GT40 P/1133, which was specially built for the owner of Safir Engineering and kept as his personal car. At 857 kgs it is probably the lightest GT40 ever built, being one of just two cars constructed with a bonded aluminium chassis instead of steel. P/1133 also features ultra-lightweight carbon-fibre body panels and an open 'roadster' roof. It is fitted with a Ford 5.3 litre engine built by Mathwall, (dyno-tested to 425bhp), Dry sump lubrication system, MSD electronic ignition, ZF 5-speed gearbox, AP racing brakes with vented discs, Koni adjustable shock absorbers, AP twin plate clutch, BRM magnesium alloy wheels and an automatic fire extinguisher system.

We are now delighted to be able to offer for sale GT40 P/1133 in truly exceptional condition throughout and still with just one 'significant' owner from new and only 3600 miles recorded. The car is ready for immediate use on the road or track and is priced realistically compared to all others.

Surprised they didn't include the chassis number on the sill stripes with all the other information thereon displayed! Note the MK II rear deck and the MK I front clip. I recall this car being done for Peter Thorpe as the "ultimate" GT40.
