There are tow basic classifications: narrow band O2 and wide band O2. The wide band O2 provides accurate estimates of the AFR over a wide range of AFR. The narrow band O2 can provide accurate estimate only at 14.7 AFR. You could in theory linearize the non linear narrow band O2 sensor; however, its non-linearity is a function of temperature. The wide band O2's with appropriate circutry provide accurate estimates over a wide range of AFR and temp. With the wide band O2 it is possible to use the output to tune the engine at wide open throttle (full power). Narrow band O2's are used to tune the engine at or near 14.7 (cruise condition) only. Most ECU's that use narrow band O2's do not run in closed loop at WOT. Please see:

For more information on wideband O2 sensor systems for DIY types. Most complete analyzer systems from Motec and Autronic for example cost ~$1500 but can be used in closed loop over complete tuning range of the ECU.
