My friend - I saw that, Liked and seriously want one if funds could ever allow!

What would vehicles would I have to look for here in the UK for trans/engine please? An old XJ?

Jaguar engines can be made to look extremely beautiful (from a gearhead's perspective). This is the engine from a very famous drag-racing Mini altered in the UK.

Yes, but you do pay for the beauty. Couple years ago, I think they quoted me 13.5k for 315 hp. I went with a much more stock build in end and the much less auspicious SU induction. No doubt with pride in their work, comes craftsmanship. But modern hp is so much cheaper and reliable

Yet, so many of us rush to the chance of driving "old".

D Type, body details

Since I was in the neighborhood, I stopped by and paid a visit to Fran at RCR. While there I happened to notice the new D Type.

A painted and complete body was on display looking impressive in its British Racing Green livery. Although it is not sitting on an RCR chassis and the tires and wheels are temporary, the body looked really good.

Rivets had been added as per the original.

This particular car is set up as a single seat. The initial RCR cars will be two seat with a full width windscreen. Perhaps the single seat version will be an option.

Either a full tail fin or the head rest only will be options.

Properly punched aluminum vents will fill those two openings on the front clip.

Lift the front clip and you will find aluminum panels, giving the same visual effect as the original.

The proportions and stance look really good. If I were to build one, this would be my color.

Thanks for the detailed pics. The D is one of my top 5 favorite cars ever. I'm just worried that I'll be too tall for it.

Based upon my personal inspection, I am reasonably sure the headroom will be sufficient, even with a racing helmet.

I can't imagine legroom being an issue. It has a very roomy cockpit for this genre of vehicle.

I will post some chassis pics shortly.

Obviously you are a tall guy but if you look at how high the diminutive drivers of old sit in an original , then you will be similarly placed on my D ,

D Type, Chassis Details

The passenger compartment is an aluminum monocoque tub. Substantial sponsons left and right and the large tunnel make it a rigid structure. There is a large removable panel in the tunnel for access to the transmission. The pedals are mounted on the top of the foot well, like the original.

A subframe is bolted to the front end, much like the original. Compare the layout of the front subframe to the original and the resemblance is striking. The upper and lower control arms will be Jaguar parts. The details were being finalized, so the front sub frame is not yet powder coated in the pictures.

The expansion tank mounted between the engine and the radiator is a prominent item on the original. Fran plans to fabricate that item for the kit.

The rear solid axle (like the original) is connected to links made from flat steel, like the original. Rear disc brakes with integral emergency brakes are included. A steel frame ties the rear suspension to the rear of the passenger tub.

QA1 spring shocks will be used on all four corners, natural aluminum color, to look the part but yet up to date function.

Fran expects the total weight of the Jag to come in around 2000 pounds. With a Jag 4.2 litter six and those narrow original tires, this thing should be a blast to drive.

Is the rear axle included with the kit? Looks kind of like a Ford 8.8, but it's been awhile since I've been under some Jeeps. Also, the 4 flat bar links look great (just like the originals) but will there be any binding with the triangulated link on the bottom through the suspension stroke?

I still remember think WT*, when I opened the shop manual to remove engine out of my XKE. It read something like this:
1. disconnect battery
2. remove seats
3. etc

What, remove seats is step #2 on removing engine....I knew this was NO Ford at that point and sadly they weren't making that up as I found out. If Fran makes it easier in any account, its a BONUS

Nevermind my last post (#114). I've never noticed the bottom "triangulated stabilizer" arms before until now. Here's a cutaway drawing of a short nose D Type. Very interesting stuff, and it's pretty cool that Fran has replicated it perfectly.

As an ex-pat Brit with a lifelong passion for the D Type I have seen many replicas, good, and bad. Of course a key point is the proportions of the body, and this one looks just right......BUT the other thing that distinguishes them is the correct size of wheels. Most of the Dunlop rep rims are 15". D Types run on 16", and on some races were run on 17", but 16 is correct. That extra inch makes such a difference to the "right look" of the D. Hope you make/sell the correct 16" rims too.
I would like to think I'd be in for an order on one of these myself - my goal is to build one certainly....few quid short for now.
I note the thread is around 2012 & looking at RCR website the D rep isn't even mentioned. What happened to it?

read this thread and check out the pictures above posted during the last couple of weeks, you will see that our D type is well and truly alive.
We are using 16's by the way.
