To AV or not to AV, that is the question...

To all the Brits on here.

I cast my vote this morning.... I don't mind sharing my opinion with you guys. I voted NO, as I feel that AV isn't a step forward, and frankly it would see the end of the Conservative party as a power for a very, very long time...

Watch this clip. Very funny, and very true from a classic british black comedy from the eighties....

frankly it would see the end of the Conservative party as a power for a very, very long time...

And what would be the problem with that !!!

We may have only two parties , but the vote gets split the same as it does for the kitties .
When one party doesn't stand united , they will fall , unless the rules can be changed to their favor .
Then when in power they are still divided , and they fail to represent anyones interest .
Best rethink who gets in in the first place .
Politics serves individual interests , and not the countries !
FPTP gives the group most united the chance to get things done , all be it in the name of politics and not the actual better good of the country .
Good luck !

Frank, I can't really disagree with any of that

I believe Yes is the answer

It's the only time the political monkeys will give us a chance to have a say on the method of voting them in / out

If we all say NO then they will forever ram it down our throats that "Back in 2011 we held a referendum and it was rejected"

So I'd say yes - it at least gives the population the possibility of having further discussion / input into getting a better way of getting rid of the clowns

That said I am not convinced that AV as offered is the correct way forward but then with more than 2 parties the FPTP is flawed too. - Best of the bad bunch. (About the same as the politicians who decided on what we were to choose.

Having listened to people talking through the pros and cons of each system rather than read or watch the yes/no campaign ads, I concluded that there are more downsides with AV than FPTP. For you Ian, you need a none of the above box to tick on your voting slip by the sounds of it!

All politicians are clowns. If they are not when they are elected they soon become clowns, doesn't matter which party they represent.

To me it is obvious why Clegg supports AV. He should end up with more seats if AV is implemented. Tories seem united on this one whilst Labour seem split, which surprises me. I wonder if AV would affect their dominant hold in Scotland?

If AV gets in, then I wonder how long before Scotland is pushed away from Westminster as a separate country, being a Labour/Liberal country with zero Tory MPs?

Hey ho, off to vote I go!

One thing that the politicians seem to overlook in all this is - who is going to count all these votes, over and over again ? I did 30 years as a presiding officer at local and parliamentary elections, and know how the simple "First past the Post" counts get very long and difficult, I have not spoken to any of my ex colleagues who are prepared to do the counts under AV rules, it will take many hours and huge arguements with the returning officers before any confirmation of the elected candidate is announced.

Well, I think YES

and NO really....

Funnily enough I don't mind. I'm always up for something different but if we are truly "the Mother of all Parliaments" why change now?

I am only worried at the amount of time wasted over the Alernative Voting System, and whilst I believe Screaming Lord Such would have brought a breath of fresh air into parliament, he would have needed AV to have any chance of being elected, along with any other fringe raving lunatics out there.

I suppose if you can abide by the rules made by a Government formed of extreme right wing and left parties with a strong church presence and the Lesbian Breast Freedom Movement in a coalition from hell (Italy comes to mind) then I suppose you should vote YES.

Another weird fact is that if last year's General Election was re-run on AV system, we would have ended up with:

A Conservative/Liberal Coalition..

Weird eh?

So, as far as I'm concerned it's erm, er.. I'll let you know at 2200 later.. :)

Actually, thinking harder I believe YES because I cannot wait for the Socialist Rebublic of Marlow to be declared, as they will make boat moorings affordable for proles like me..

Mate,

Would you believe that my Mum went out with Screaming Lord Such on a date many years ago....

You, a prole......pleb more like ;)

I Find it funny that we are voting on an alternative voting system, using the first past the post voting method.

If the alternative voting system wins by the first past the post method, would they then re-count it using the alternative method, to see if it won?

Of course AV would only come into play if there are more than two candidates and none got more than 50%. In the referendum there are only two 'candidates' Mr Yes and Mr No.

I voted yes although it's now probably turned into an anti Liberal Democrat vote so there is no chance of the YES vote winning

Ah, but I voted YES in a tactical vote against those champagne 'socialist' crooks who almost crippled us.. :quirk:

Last time I did that and voted YES, we seemed to have been dragged into a nightmare called the EEC... and again, it was a vote AGAINST the workshy red riddled union system who voted NO. :(

In other words my enemy's enemy is my friend...

Oh well, can't get it right all the time.....

Under AV of course, tactical voting would be obsolete.
