Thx Steve for the question and the heads up. I will check with the shop on Mon and let you know and see what you think of their approach.

Re: CAV GT 40 #47 Gulf Spec

Dave Wagner built a webber car with a vacuum pump from some OEM application. I will try to find out the part number, etc.

Re: CAV GT 40 #47 Gulf Spec

Mine has a vacuum pump as well, mounted up front. The car's plumbed and wired so it
can be mounted in the engine bay, but there's really not enough room there. I'm not
sure just which pump they used, but it might have been this one.
I came up with a whole list of possibilities at one point (a GM part #, a Ford part #
from an F350 diesel truck, ...) but I can't find it now...

Re: CAV GT 40 #47 Gulf Spec

Steve I posed the question about the vacuum set up with the shop today. Boy were they taken aback. I've forwarded your link and post and they will look into that set up. I will let you know the final result.
Once again thanks for the heads up.

Re: CAV GT 40 #47 Gulf Spec

From David:
My Vac pump was from a 1980's Escort diesel which works well, but is noisy. I've noticed several vac. pumps in "Steet Rod" type magazines that I was going to try for my next build.
********* End of Davids message ***************

My guess is that it is a bit noise in part because it was hard mounted up front. I wonder if soft mounting might help.

Re: CAV GT 40 #47 Gulf Spec

They guys in LV mounted mine with rubber shock mounts, and I heard it run
(car was still up on stands without the seats, so this was just leaning in and
listening). Not bad at all. So I think soft mounts are definitely called for.
Different pumps may have different decibel levels as well...

Hi guys!! I've posted a couple of new pics, on my yahoo site, of the car with the orange centered wheels now on with rubber. They're under the CAV GT40 #2 album.

Vic,

WOW, the pictures look awesome! I have so many people waiting to see this thing. Sorry to say I won't be traveling up there to take delivery. Maybe the next one! I have been thinking about how to spec it out daily. Being new to the forum, I must say that I'm surprised the CAVs are not talked about more, am I missing something? I think I'll try to post some pics of the Gulf car when I get it, spark some interest, or controversy at least! Talk to you later, take care of my baby now!! (I love the mirrors by the way)

Re: CAV GT 40 #47 Gulf Spec

Pvan340 I'm not mechanically inclined at all!! However this past weekend I went to the shop to see how it was going and lo and behold I get the privelage of helping to build the car. Now with great anticipation and FEAR of screwing something up I proceed to do some work. Under the watchful eye of the mechanic /owner of course. So I get to install the complete right front wheel assembly on to the car(now it did come partially together with the upper and lower arms attached to the hub, brake discs on). Then proceed to asssit with the installation of the calipers, shock and front sway bar and tightening down of all related nuts and bolts. I also go to test the quick realese steering wheel. Boy is that sweet!!! And it will make it a lot easier to get in and out of the car. Any ways I had a blast and hope to be able to do more as my busy schedule and lack of mechanical knowledge and experience permit.

Re: CAV GT 40 #47 Gulf Spec

Well guys here's the latest. The tranny is behind schedule. Hopefully it will be here by end of next week. After that probably a good week to finish drivetrain install and get the bugs worked out. The rubber is mounted and balanced and on the car. The filters/covers have been ordered for the individual webers. 396 Stroker is on the floor ready to be installed. So it looks like a week of little to nothing until tranny arrives. Keep your fingers crossed for an early delivery of the tranny!!

When did you order your trans? I ordered mine the first of June and hope it arrives soon.

Re: CAV GT 40 #47 Gulf Spec

Gary I can tell you that it was ordered just before June 1 and the deposit payment was made on June 2 by credit card. I guess it's now a race as to who gets his first. hehe

Re: CAV GT 40 #47 Gulf Spec

You guys using ZF's? If you're using the Audi/Getrag just head down to the yard and get one. The rebuild kits are DIRT CHEAP for these things ($150) and you'll be on the road in no time. With $150 in the tranny you'll be on the road for around $3-400. I've got a Quaiffe limited slip in mine so it is a bit more since those things don't come cheap, but it is part of the RF package.

Re: CAV GT 40 #47 Gulf Spec

Ron it's my understanding that the Audi can't stand up to higher torque and loads of the bigger engines. ( not trying to start an argument just what I've been told). Also the ZF is period correct. So I guess it depends on what one is looking for and the amount of $ one can and afford to spend.

Re: CAV GT 40 #47 Gulf Spec

Apparently they do well with the power. There are many cars running around on the street and track with them. I've not run mine, obviously, but there are many who have with good results. CAV uses them as well as NZ and RF. You must be using the ZF, which is certainly nice but pricey.

Re: CAV GT 40 #47 Gulf Spec

Yes Ron I will be using the ZF. I was looking to try and get period correct where I could. Very fortunately and thankfully I'm currently in the postion to do so. However it goes without saying that I still try and get the absolute best ,very BEST deal possible on purchasing anything.

Re: CAV GT 40 #47 Gulf Spec

Ron,
I do think the Audi box has shown to be a very good transaxle. The main reason I am going with the RBT is that in order to fit the taller 351 engine in the car (CAV) the tranny must be run inverted. This is currently not possible with the Audi. The added benefit is the better gear ratio selections and lower CG. If I were running a 302 based car I would probably go with the Audi.
