Headlights

I'm trying to find headlights for the 40. There have been many posts on what was originally fitted (Marchal), and there has been reference to Vauxhall Viva, Renault 12 (lights available from someone who posted here and on ebay) and to a Cibie/ Valeo number 4 70 078 . However, no mention of what this light was fitted to.
While I was at Silverstone on Sunday I had a look at the 7 pairs of headlights. All appeared to be of similar size. 2 were Hella, 2 were Cibie and the rest were Lucas.
These all appear to be about the 9 x 4.75 size.(220mm x 120mm)
I forgot to see which were E marked.
I am looking for lights of this size which are still in production with E marks (for SVA)
Please can someone tell me the part numbers and/or what they were original fitment for, and where to get them from?
Thanks

Hi Lee, I used Hella Part#1059 headlamps for my DRB - they fit perfectly in the front clip recesses & the DRB back-mount plate, look very original, & meet the Oz ADR requirements. Should be ok for SVA.

Kind Regards,

Peter D.

Thanks Peter. I think those lights are the narrower size?

I also now have part number Valeo 470075 for Renault 12 which is 200mm. Not sure if this is still available.

Any more?

If you want some headlights I suggest you phone Mark. As you know they are very hard to source and I believe that Mark has them made to order. The company that makes them won't touch an order for less than 50 pairs!

Michael,

The headlights are not the only thing off of the Saab 99 that can be useful. The windshield wiper system is absolutely great for putting into a GT40 or any kind of car. Just like the Lucas system on English cars, but the knurled head is much larger and easier to fit for those of us in the US anyway. It has a wider sweep angle as well: 165 degrees if memory serves.

Regards,
Lynn

If anyone wants a pair of 9 1/2" x 4 3/4" convex Marchal 'E' numbered halogen lamps (less bulbs) suitable for right hand traffic countries (left hand drive) then I have a pair of NOS items for £90 each + shipping. Although I believe these are the same shape and size as the originals, apart from accepting halogen bulbs, they are not the same lens pattern. They have "S.E.V. MARCHAL" and the 'cat face' logo on the lenses.

They are new and only have very minor storage wear to the exterior of shells.

Cheers

Rob

Can anyone supply the number or application of the Lucas headlight. There are plenty of them out there on 40s, but what are they/ where from?

Lucas headlights of pretty much the right dimensions were fitted to MkI Escorts, early Hillman Hunters, HC Vivas and early Vauxhall Chevettes. They are very slightly different to the original Marchals (only a few millimeters) but fill the headlight boxes well. The lens on the Hillman and Vauxhall units is a bit deeper (front to back) than the Escort units and tends to protrude somewhat if not fitted well. Hope this helps.

Can anyone post or email me some photos of the 470078 cibie lamps or confirm for me how they dip - are they only for RHD or are they changeable like the 470075, and what bulb type do they use? The 470075 uses the old style large round base double filament H4 bulb. Does the 78 use the same or the more moderm 3 prong type double filament H4 bulb?
I think they are what I'm after but I just want to confirm.
Thanks

I saw a GT40 (KVA of Robin sundt) at Le Mans this year and he has just fitted new headlights.

A little bit narrower than others but a pretty good sixe and shape for the headlight recess.

They were from (now don't laugh) a Citroen 2CV.

He was amazed at how close they were in size and also the fact that they are available right and left hand drive, and with or without side light.

No idea on the price but I guess a complete scrap 2CV is worth £10
